    Default Lake James

Hi All. Wife and I looking into moving to the area from Arkansas, both retired and thinking about moving closer to daughter, grandson, and son-in-law. Any ideas on lakefront homes, regulations on fishing, etc. Thanks, Paul

The sate wide crappie size limit is 8" creel limit 10 fish. There are exceptions as some lakes have no size limit and no creel limit. There are none of those close to Morganton. Lake James is a deep clear lake in beautiful surroundings. It is not known as a good lake doe crappie although it does produce some nice crappie for those who can fish clear lakes. There are some nice housing developments on the lake. The lakefront property has zoning regulations designed to protect the environment and are too complicated to list here. I have lived in Burke County all my life and have traveled the US to some extent and I like this area more than any state I have visited. Not because of the crappie fishing however. .

Lure is a small, but great fishing lake that is HIGHLY developed, terribly expensive and loaded with rules and regulations. The Town of Lake Lure actually keeps the lake stocked with very healthy fish including Rainbow Trout, Largemouth and Crappie. It's a resort type place that has a population of a few hundred in the winter and many thousands in the summer. Daytime fishing is tough in the warm months because of the immense boat traffic, but from September to April, you'll hardly ever see another boat. They have a fairly extensive website that will fill you in on the cost of fishing/boating: Homepage : Town of Lake Lure Lots of other tourist type things in the area, too, like Chimney rock. It's a beautiful, interesting place that is very busy in the summer.

A man made lake. Mostly for people who are lake shore owners although you can get a permit to fish the lake. It is small 27 miles of shoreline. I have never had a desire to fish the lake so I know little about it.

Lake James and Lake Lure are beautiful. Close to Morganton, Lake Hickory is a decent crappie fisherie. Lake Norman about an hour away is a huge lake with decent fishing. Also about an hour and a quarter away is Lake Wylie which has excellent Crappie Fishing. It is partly in NC and Partly in SC no reciprocal license agreement however.

    W. Kerr Scott Reservoir in Wilkesboro has decent crappie fishing and nice scenery.
