I haven't fished for crappie but the cats are huge. Try limb lining with some cut mullet using circle hooks. It's a blast!
Does anyone fish or has fished the cape fear for crappie? I have contemplated trying it out instead of making my usual 90 min drive to Jordan.

Seems like there was an article not long ago about crappie fishing that river in the Carolina Sportsman magazine, you may want to look on their website and see if you can find it.
I am pretty sure that I read the article that you are referring g to and that is the reason for me asking about the crappie in the cape fear, I was wondering if anyone has experience fishing it or if it is mainly an article to catch attention. I fished a couple times this winter with no luck other than a couple bass. That's for the advice though
Are you talking about fishing below the Buckhorn dam or above it. I've fished above the dam for years and there are a number of people who do. Put in at the ramp at Avents Ferry on Hwy. 42. Mostly just fished blowdowns and always get some. Never tried long-lining or multi-rod fishing in the river. Always one rod with minnows and jigs.
There are some nice crappie in Cape Fear. They fight like crazy. But as it has already been said, some big cats as well. And, they love minnows. Try it, you will like it.
