I have a Hummingbird 597 with downscan. This is a primitive unit compared to what is on the market now. I like the down imaging it provides, but I would LOVE to have side imaging and would prefer it over DI, if I had a choice. I think that side imaging would provide a more useable image. There have been some side imaging pix posted on this forum that have been fantastic. I'd say, go with side imaging, or even better, both!

Si is better at finding the fish , then you can use di to figure out the depths. Both are useful and side is a must have.

I have down and side in the 5 '' size.
Iike them both but would recommend that in the side you get the biggest screen you can afford. On the small screen it is hard to make out details.

I agree with PAM3417 , I have the 5 inch screen but I think the bigger screen would be a lot better .

I had the hummingbird helix5 on my last boat and only went with the di because of the size screen. loved the detail. I just purchased a helix 9 for my new boat with SI so will see if it is worth the difference in cost. About $300 more to just add the SI at that size. Looking forward to trying it.
