    Default finally

finally found some crappie in the black river. moved to burgaw about a year ago and just couldn't seem to catch any freshwater fish I wanted. have caught plenty of flounder, red drum, trout. and lots of other salt fish. found fish today where friedfish said they would be. just had to keep picking away at em, 1 or 2 at a time. ended up with 14. biggest was 13 1/4'', 5 12'' fish, kept 5 for the fryin pan. had to eat durn flounder last nite. fish in rivers here are not as long as jordans or harris, but they are real fat. like footballs. only caught 3 on jigs, rest on minnows, 6ft deep in 13ft water. hope to catch another good day soon.

Glad you enjoy living down East and have found some crappie. You're right--flounder and salt water fish are good to eat, but there's something special about those good crappie fillets.

Awesome Enoman!! Good to hear from ya. I gotta buddy named Ray Jenkins that just moved down to Burgaw last year, and my aunt and uncle used to live in Burgaw back in the 80's. Small world. Jordan has been hot this year so far. Getting great numbers and some good keepers. Just waiting on Randleman to open to see how it goes there this year. I need to spend more time on Randleman as I only know a few places to fish. Hopefully we'll get on it a bit more this year. Good to hear from ya.

ENOMAN...You ever fished the Cape Fear river out of castle hayne or lock & dam 1? I heard those can be good places to catch crappie at times.

And Mikefish I am right there with ya cant wait for randleman to open up. Been counting down the days til the 27th and gettin some tackle ready. I found some good places to catch some crappie at randleman last couple of years that are off the beaten path. I mostly bass fish out there but have done well the few times we have crappie fished. Not always a ton of big ones but numbers definitely there.

Sorry the last trip to that spot didn't work out. Now that is the typical report I usually post from that spot. Guard it with your life! So happy I could help. Sometimes you can anchor up on that fallen tree near the mouth of the cove and pull up a dozen from that tree, sometimes zero. Glad to help. Tell Jack.

We gotta meet up on the Black here shortly and tag team em. I can fish one cove, you can fish another and we can find em twice as fast! When we figure out where they're at we can slay em! Its a little tougher fishing these rivers, but all the more rewarding. Were the turkeys out?

yeah bassinyea, that is what we have found. Plenty of fish, just not very big. We have caught a few in the 13"-14 1/4" range, but very few. We don't fish it much, but if we only have a half day to fish it is only about a mile from the house the way the crow flies so we go there. It's a good place to take kids and people who don't fish much too as they usually can catch plenty. I just have to expand my area I fish and find some new holes.

I'm gonna brave the weather Sunday if you wanna meet me out there I'll show you a few more spots, though that was my honey hole. If you have a kayak or canoe I can show you where to do some real damage during the spawn. Keep in mind the spawn in the Black and NE Cape Fear rivers occurs earlier than in the lakes. Usually the last week in February till the second week in March. Sometimes it's over sooner than that. But yeah, if you're feeling manly I'll show you a couple more good spots, even though we might not catch many due to the weather. Thinking about hitting Town Creek for yellow perch. At least there I'll be our of the wind (some).
