I have not ever fished in the tournaments before but would like to start. I just need to know what yall's tricks are for keeping the fish alive for a long period of time while on the water?

This time of the year, you shouldn't have much issue as long as you have some fresh water on them. We had 25-30 in my boat last weekend, with just the livewell open to where water could run in and out, and every fish we had was alive. If you move to another spot, just remember to plug or close it off.

As the water warms you can run an aerator and either freeze drink bottles to cool the water, or add small amounts of ice.

Jack's right--just about anything with water will keep them alive. Come join us for a few of the tournaments. It's been a great learning experience for me along with meeting/making good friends.

What do you guys do this time of year when you catch crappie deep then float when you put them in the livewell?

Keep the water in the livewell fresh.

They make those checkers now with a hole so you can deflate the bladder. I've never tried it, or seen it done other than a commercial demo.

The fish were biting yesterday and should be biting this weekend. Even if you are new, come on and join us. There were several times the first couple years that I participated that I did not even weigh in one fish. There's one thing in life I know: if you hang out around people that know what they are doing, and especially fishing, you will learn and get better. I'm living proof that by watching and listening to people like Rod, Freddie, Jeremy and a number of other winners, you will become a better fisherman.

Not trying to hijack this thread but I have one of those checkers but it starts at 10 inches (which is fine at Jordan, but not at an 8" limit)and I really don't like the location it gives plus you need a long needle.

Question is even though the fish is still alive but more like paralyzed in this way, does that count dead or alive in a tournament?
