I suggest start at Wal-mart or any where that sells rods and get several in your hand and see which one feels the best and meets your needs. I have found that the price of a rod does not always make it a good one, the fish don't know or care what kind of fishing rod you are using! It is what is comfortable to you. I have purchased cheaper rods and have been very pleased by the way they perform against higher priced rods.
Difference between day and night: Day= one rod, one jig/Night= Many rods & a bucket full of minners

Keeper, where are you from? Flemings Candy Company can order them for you for less than $50...any length. They are between China Grove & Salisbury on Hwy 29. All of my casting rods are Wally Marshall Signature Series. Been using them since BPS carried them. Can't get away from them as I have given me great service paired with Shimano spinning reels.

I like the 8' bass pro rod. It's about 50 bucks, but has good feel and I vertical jig with it and the 10 footer also. nice light rod with great sensitivity. when they get spooky I throw a slip cork with it and it works good to get it out there where I want it.

The graphite microlites at bass pro are good rods for the price.About all I do is cast and I like the 7'6" ultralight in these. These rods are IM6 and are 49.00 and 39.00 on sale..I have a Gander Mtn IM8 7ft ultralight that is about 5 years old and has been a really good one and is great for roadrunners.Have not been able to find them in their stores lately only the IM6 ones hope they didn't stop making them.Another good casting rod I have is the Shakespeare Agility IM8 in 7 ft.All these are good medium priced long distance casting rods and the next step up are going to be 100.00$ and up.Team one of the rods above with a Diawa SS 700 and you can make some super long casts.

My favorite rod in that price range is a Norseman ESP. Great rods!

    I'm with Dan

You can get a 6'6" or 7' PowerLite ESP rod from Grizzly Jig for $65 + s/h.

ESP rods have micro guides, so you won't be casting slip floats easily ... but, pair it with a wide or long spool reel and some quality mono or copoly line and you can sling a jig or jig/clip-on bobber a good long ways.
I also recommend taping the reel to the handle, and then push the slip rings over the reel foot ... just as insurance against the slip rings coming loose.

This is how I did mine :
