Default Any Trout fisherman out there? (fly rod or spinning?)

    Hey Yall,
Im headed up to Boone for my first semester at Appalachain State and Im looking in to doing some trout fishing, I have caught a few trout before but this will be my first time pursuing them on a regular basis I own an ultra light spinning combo and I have plenty of fly fishing experience, however I have broken my fly rod. Im just looking for some tips and tricks and an idea of what kind of tackle to bring should I buy a new fly rod?(going to college so Im low on funds) or should I stick with the spinning out fit and in that case what lures do i need? Any help is apperciated
    thanks

personally I would get another rod, I got a redington red fly2 8' 6" 5wt for about 50 bucks from cabelas, not bad for a good quality rod. I have done spin fishing for trout but to me nothing compares to trout on the fly.
When in doubt, set the hook.

    5wt flyrod

fish the catch and release only streams. the "meat" streams get cleaned out pretty quick.

caddis fly, black stonefly nymph, and green woolybuggers work best for me. beadhead nymphs and grey midges are good as well

    expect to have some company.

my wife graduated from app, so we got to live up there for a few years. theres a ton of good fishing between boone and asheville. get a trout map and a gazeteer and explore.

I started trout fishing when I was in college in Winston Salem. One of the guys in the admissions department was from the mountains of Virginia and we either fished near his dad's place or my grandpa's place 2 or 3 days a week during the spring. If you don't have the funds for a flyrod, just take what you have and fish. The experience will be worth its weight in gold when you do get the flyrod replaced. For spinning rods I like the Joe's Flys (Joes Favorite is my favorite) as well as "cheese worms". If you are fishing catch and keep streams then you can't beat live bait.

done it for many years. moved up to graphite rods and then a few years ago moved back to fiberglass only. Just more fun. I use old Fenwicks and newer fiberglass rods. 3 wt to 9 wt, depending on the target species - mostly 3-5 for Trout.

Like Mike said if funds are short fish what you have. I don't know the rules there but if you can fish corn, green gaint whole kernel works well use a small hook, light bullet sinker to fit water flow and go slow, joes lures work well as do some small spinner baits. Good luck and enjoy.

I used to go up to Boone all the time to trout fish when I had a life of travel and adventure... there is trout EVERYWHERE!!! Creeks, side ditches and etc... but the paces that produced for me didn't have enough room to use fly rods.

belive it or not I use the same poles i use for crappie fishing and its a lot of fun if your using bait, and the fight is grat when you hook into one with a long rod. Have fun,I used to fish brown mtn its above morganton but should not be that far a drive from the college.

I live in Morganton and fish both spinners and flies, but over time I have gone with flies more and more. After the fish are pressured and the summer wears on I find that the flies will outfish the spinners about 5 to 1! Elk Hair Caddis, Adams Parachutes, and some of the larger stimulator patterns work best for me. Prince nymphs and pheasant tails are good subsurface options that I usually fish as droppers under the dry flies. A good 5 wt is always an option, but unless you are going to spend time on the Watauga and Holston over in Tennessee a 3-4 wt is good for most streams around here. I use a 7.5 foot 3-4 wt most times, but I do own a 5 wt too. If you go the spinner route, it is hard to beat the Joe's Flies as has already been mentioned by several. Just be sure to remove the treble hooks if you fish the wild streams as single hook artificial is the law. Good luck and have fun whatever you do!

Try Craigslist for a good used rod. I went under the Sporting Goods section and typed in "fly". Both Raleigh and Winston-salem had some used rods/reels for sale. Good luck.
