look for a locally owned tire place that is where i get all my lead the old wheel weights are great as long as you get the metal clips off of em when you melt em i suppose thats what your doing, anyway i get my lead by the gallon bucket full and thats from one store in a weeks time if you need more go to more stores

Haven't been able to find any in 3 or 4 years.Scrap price got the tire dealers selling it to scrap yards. If you are going to make split shot don't use tire weights. tried one time and you couldn't close with a pair of channel locks.

Usually the only tire dealers you might get it from are independent shops, most of the larger ones are recycling them per company rules. Some places to try are look for muzzloading groups in your area, they use pure to cast for their muskets. Check some local plumbers sometimes they have a stash of old lead water pipe, I found out when my landlord sent a plumber by to fix the sink and he saw me casting jigs. For 500 1/16oz jigs I got 400 lbs. of pure lead piping. Check out Cast Boolits - Dedicated To The World Of Cast Bullets! and see if there's anyone in your area or close by, there's a few folks who sell or post a want to buy.

I know a bunch of guys are buying bulk from Roto Metals as they know they're getting pure. Most places you go it's gonna run you .85 to 1.00 a pound, just no getting around it.

Racoon - Gotta disagree with you on the car battery lead - the plates are lino type and very hard lead. Now if you can find an old battery yard and they'll let you in take some vise grips and pull the round terminals from the top, they're pure lead.

    Hope this helps.

tried melting bateries one time, too much slag. If youre looking for sinkers, round, bank, etc, check the flea markets. Locally, there is a guy selling 5lbs ready made for $9.00.

Retired dirt track racers (lots of them around) might turn loose of some lead. They usually have big chunks.

Old tire weights will work fine for that and is cheaper to obtain than pure lead.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
