I was born and raised in The Rochester area and moved to eastern North Carolina in 1971. I have found that the fishermen here are some of the most respectful and helpful that anyone could encounter. Most of them will reveal their techniques and hot spots. Most of them will ask you, "ya'll aren't from around here are you?". At that point you have the opportunity to head north on I-95 or show them that you are not like the stereotyped "Damn Yankee". If they get the message that you think that you outclass them, and are smarter than they are, you might as well take I-95. On the other hand, if you are a fellow that wants to learn, shut your mouth, open your eyes and ears, and be prepared to learn. Most of them will invite you to go with them to one of their "secret spots" and you will get an education on crappie fishing. If you encounter sarcasm and rudeness, you probably brought something from up north that you should have left there. Since I've lived here, I have fished it all, Gulf Stream to black-water swamps, and without the help of the locals, I would probably be a mediocre fisherman, at best.
Don't get me wrong, there are many fishermen from the north that have been coming here for many years who have befriended our local fishermen and established a lifelong relationship that is renewed annually. Give it a chance - - - you may be greatly rewarded.
