    Default Crappie Weekend

After the Husker loss Saturday night, I needed to blow some steam and "get away". So I went to Wehrspann at 6am to do some crappie fishing. Did pretty well, caught my limit by 11am. Though it was hard. Clouds in the morning made the crappie shallow, less than 3'. Sunshine pushed them down near the bottom. The didn't have a set pattern of what they wanted. But I managed before the crowds showed up to get their fill of the nets and buckets. Nothing to write home about when it came to size, 6 - 8" crappie, both black and white.

As for my 2nd trip, I headed out to Walnut Creek this afternoon, talk to a few folks that I know fish the Base Lake and asked me how I was doing with the crappie out there. I just laughed, as i have yet to catch or hear about anyone catching a crappie out there this year.

I moved around a bit at Walnut Creek, but after several hours and no bites, I was ready to give up and head home. I had package waiting for me at home that I would have to pick up at the office, but they closed at 6pm. Checked the time, 6:08pm. Well, might as well stay here and keep trying. Good choice! Little bit after 7:30pm things picked up quickly as some light rain started to fall and a decent breeze blew in from the northwest (shortly before it was calm). Boy, I couldn't keep the crappie off my jig. From 7:30 until 8:45 I caught around 40 crappie. Most of them seemed to be in the 8 - 10" range, but there were a few that pushed 12". And of course there were the little ones out there as well. I caught my limit on crappie again within the first 30 min. After that I just kept on tossing my jig out there and see how many I could catch. I had to end my night earlier than I wanted to, had to use the bathroom. But things seemed to be slowing down a little bit any way.

Still had a great time out there tonight. Looking forward for the rest of the week and the next.

Glad to hear that you had some luck. The temps are going to drop after today and will stay around the low 60's for the next week the way it looks. EB
