    Default Boat Registering Question

    Hello all,

I am buying a new boat and am wondering where I should license it, I have a home in Independence, and a lake house in Warsaw. The boat will be stored permanently at the Warsaw house, do I need to register it at the Warsaw address?

Which ever address has the lowest combined sales tax and personal property tax... as they will be on going expenses.

The license should be statewide shouldn't it, still in MO? Taxes might be another issue. I'd pay taxes wherever it's less! Insurance co. might want to know where it's being kept? They do with autos but don't think I was ever asked about my boat.

    Default Boat Registering Question

Pretty sure Benton county is less than Jackson county. We always kept our boats registered in Morgan county.
If it’s real long you can skip the state registration and file with the USG, name the boat + port of Independence and skip registration and taxes indefinitely.
But I’m betting anything run around Warsaw is too short.

Sales tax and personal property tax depending on which address he uses (state =same, county = slightly variable, city = maybe not at all)

Independence has a higher tax for sure than the area surrounding Warsaw where his property probably is. So saves a couple percent not paying city tax. Id do all my personal property in Benton before paying Jackson + Independence.

Now Independence would say he must use his primary residence, but Benton county would be all too happy… which location is most legal? Meh, who is to say he didn’t live at the lake 51% of the time when he registered the boat.

Vermont will title it (one of those tiny NE states anyway) they don’t care if you live out of state. They’ll take the revenue. (I looked into building a schoolie and Missouri and Kansas make it very hard to register a bus as an RV which affects license and insurance, but not Vermont).
