Lots of companies will blame things on Covid but if you were good before Covid you’ll be fine after!
Go watch boats launch some weekend and count - bet very few other than Merc and Yamh
How many Edsels do you see on the road?
Just read that Evinrude production has been halted and they will no longer be made. They have been around forever. The parent company (Bomadier)? Said they have contracted with Mercury to provide motors for their lines of boats. Said the virus had hurt them badly. BUT their price was a lot higher than other brands. A couple of years ago we needed to get a different motor so I priced a 40hsp jet from the different brands at dealerships. The Evinrude was $2000 higher than the Mercury. We went with the Mercury 4 stroke and love it. I wonder what will happen now with warranties on the motors people have.

Yes you see very few Evinrude motors now. They probably should have went to 4 stroke instead of E Tech. Love our 4 stroke. Why would anyone want to pay thousands more for a name.

Evinrude built a good product starting 1935.
OMC got them and introduced a poorly designed direct injection fuel system (U.S. emissions law) that caused damaged power heads and reputation. Then Japan entered the picture with high quality engines that are very reliable. Still are. Mercury jumped right in.
Same thing happened with autos. After WWII Dr. W. Edwards Deming taught Japan the Quality Process and they took it to heart. Very meticulous people. Forced GM, Ford & Chrysler to pay attention, learn and use the Quality Process and improve their product.
The deal is, produce Quality or die.
QUALITY = Meeting the customer's expectations, every time. Nothing more. Very simple.
What do you expect from your boat motor? You buy the one that meets those expectations. (I hope)
RIP Evinrude. It wasn't their fault.
I'll smoke just about anything (in my smoker)
The fishing is always great. The catching varies.Speck, SpeckledSlab LIKED above post
Well say what you want but my 93 70hp still runs like a top. If it does go I will go to a 4 stroke.

I had a `92 70 horse.. well the family, I was 11 then. We burned it up on the first tank of gas after break in. The oil injector didnt work from the start so the double oil break in was a single oil. The siren/whistle thingy failed too. So it got rebuilt. The next year the power head? went out and it burned it up again. Then warranty ran out and I burned it up again. Wasnt my fault it was the power head thingy again. Mom n Dad had to fix it that time but after that everyone was afraid to use it. It mostly sat in the dock for about 10 years when we decided we might as well burn it up rather than let it rot...and we rebuilt it once more. After that I used the crap out of it for several years with no trouble. We sold it close to 10 years ago. I think its still running good.
Word was the 70hp model was known for this? glad yours is working good.
I kind of think 2 strokes days were numbered.
With mandates from the EPA becoming so strict, they were saddled with so much technology and emissions equipment that there really was no benefit to them. 2 strokes are known for being lighter and simple. Etecs are neither. No doubt a good motor, but you have to wonder, why keep them around when a 4 stroke does everything as good or better.
It is a shame to see the name go. I'm no fan of Mercury and less competition is a bad thing.
The highest non-military award given in Japan, I believe still is named after Williams Edwards Demings. Great teacher, there used to some good PBS specials with him back in the 1980’s. He tried to hard to show our industry leaders that what he had implemented was working, but most didn’t listen early enough. I believe the United States Navy was one of the first stateside to use his managerial theories.
