I scratch my head sometimes when these pros endorse their products. I was watching a youtube video on frog fishing for bass. The pro's set up was a Daiwa Zillion Type R reel, Daiwa Steez Frog Rod, Maxima 65 pound braid, and his personally developed frog. I went to Tackle Warehouse and added up $919.00 plus tax for a frog fishing rig. Are you crazy? Are you out of your mind? Would you pay that kind of money if it weren't given to you? Then you have lures alone going for $20 easy. Hey I'm sure it's all good stuff but this ol boy ain't paying that kind of money. I had no trouble today pulling a 6 pound bass wrapped in a tree using a BPS Bionic Blade Rod and BPS Nitro Reel. Brands like BPS, Quantum, Pflueger, Strike King, Yum, Creme, Norman, Bandit, Berkley, Rapala, Smithwick, Terminator, Zoom, Big Bite, just to name some are making high quality products that catch fish at reasonable price. This does not relate to crappie fishing as much but the bass fishing industry is getting expensive. Some of these manufacturers are hooking fishermen instead of fish.

Someone is paying that otherwise they prolly would not be making them. I sure know I wouldn't! Crappie fishing is expensive enough. But wait, think about it, he spent over $900 for that rig. Your average "Spider Rig" set up prolly cost even more for everythign needed. Rig for rig, we're spending more moeny.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Fishermen get "fished for" more than the fish they are after. We are suckers for new gear and we are easily separated from our money!
No way I would drop a grand on one rod and reel, even if I had all the money in the world. my grand dads would wake from their graves and take turns belting me until their arms fell off!

Even if someone gave me a rod like that, I wouldn't use it for fear of breaking it.

I don't even buy rapalas because they have gotten pricey. I use $30 plueger reels and ugly stick rods for bass and crappie. Catfish is ugly stick rods and Abu Garcia baitcasters reels that I have had for a long time. Before they raised the price on them. Love flicker shads. Creem has some hard baits at WM for .75. The bass pro xps lures are good. One time I had just tied on a new KVD 1.5 crank. First cast, first fish on lure and line broke. Even saw the nice bass. Good Palomar knot. I looked at hubby and said ".crap I might as well just throw 5 bucks in the water. I hope the other bass laugh at him with the bling hanging from his mouth". I can only imagine loosing a $20 lure. But I would never buy one anyway. I have dads old lures that would be fun to try but don't want to loose them. So I won't.

I was looking at rods at the Bassmaster Classic and a guy comes over and hands me a rod and says how's that feel? I said like I'm holding air how do they make them so light? He starts tell me about the rod guides and other info on a 7'8" bass rod. I ask how much are these and he said they start at $550.00. I handed him the rod and walked away.....far away! (And I buy fairly high end stuff well for bass anyway)

Wise man once said " It ain't the bow, its the Indian". Goes for fishing, hunting and golf equipment. But I am as guilty as the next guy at trying to "buy" a game. But I'm smarter than I used to be and don't pay 5 or 10 times what an item should cost.

A buddy of mine had a blackhorse custom rod for catfishing, extra heavy action. He paired that with a shimano tekota line counter and then he had new carbon fiber drag washers installed and upgraded ball bearings. He had over 500$ in that rig. Used it about a week then it disappeared from his boat while trailering down the interstate.
I guess the rod was very light weight and sensitive, but I don't know because I wouldn't touch it. The way I see it, if I don't know what I'm missing, then I'm not missing anything at all!

I bought a new Ambassador 5000 for $30 with my own hard earned money when I was 16. When my Dad found out he gave me a thirty minute lecture for spending so much money on a thing used for leisure. Dad thought fishing more than 5 or 6 times a year was not a wise use of time.

It's the new world order.Money,Money,Money...Party on dude until it crashes...then start over. Heck..the collapse in 2008 should have been a depression just like in the thirties. But they borrowed the money and bought us out of it. But a lot of states, cities, pension plans, school districts, companies, are bankrupt or so far in debt they will never get out. Awww..20 trillion in US debt...its just a number..don't mean a thing...just borrow some more.
