    Default Need Ideas/Recommendations

Let me preface this with the fact that I don't have a ton of experience hiking or camping... BUT

I'd like to get started and get my son started. Looking for areas near KC where we could go hike and camp, but don't want a "regular" campground... would like to be able to go out into the trails/woods and set up our own camp spot.

Any places that are good for this??

    Thanks in advance!!!

You might try searching for Primitive camp sites. I know watkins Mill has some that are clear away from the other campground area. But it isn't like it's all that far from roads and stuff. Still...there might be some other places if you search for primitive camping. Just not sure how close to KC.

It's not "near" KC but a short drive south - Stockton State Park. The West Campground has a walk-in tent camping area, water, showers & toilets in the regular camping area, and they have been working on trails for running/hiking/biking through the woods. They host a run through the woods in the fall. Check out the Stockton State Park website.
Might be a good place to try as a starter. You could get hooked.
I'll smoke just about anything (in my smoker)
The fishing is always great. The catching varies.

Check out the Truman lake website. They list devils backbone as open year round but hike in bring your own trash out. You might also check out the department of conservation site to see what they list.
God bless Charlie Brewer and Bobby Garland.
