    Default Motor issue

Hey guys I have a mercury elpto 50 . Well went to lake today started fine as usuall. Want about 200 yards then a loud clank and the engine just stopped no spit no sputter just stopped all together. Looks like the starter is stuck up idk what the issue is. Anyone have any ideas. Hopefully it falls under warranty work.

I wouldn't have any idea. Hopefully someone on here can shed some light on it. More importantly, I hope the warranty covers it too. BAD time to have motor issues!!

Then again, is there a GOOD time?!?

From your description it sounds like the motor locked up. The Starter is note engaged while it's running and if the starter won't turn it over the motor is most likely broke. I would suggest either going to the dealer you bought if from or a good boat motor mechanic.

In general, seat of the pants experience, doesn't sound good. Like Tommy says, if your engine is under factory warranty get it to a merc dealer. An ELPTO model is oil injected 2 stroke which merc hasn't built since 2010 although there were a lot of them still around throughout 2011. Most had a 1-2 year factory warranty. You can isolate it a bit by removing the starter gear and seeing if you can turn the flywheel by hand. If it's still locked up would mean powerhead or possibly lower unit but most likely powerhead. Good luck.

Yea it's a 2011 package I bought last year still have about 6 months left on warranty since it starts from purchase date. Not to impressed with mercury only 30 hours on motor And this happens. Not a happy camper.

I would not trust oil injected motors, never had one but I would be scared the injector would stop and lock the motor up which might of happened to yours. Hope you get it fixed.

Could also be hydro locked if the head gasket failed and allowed water into the cylinder.
Pull the spark plugs and see if it will turn over without them in. If there's water in there, it will shoot out far. Don't do this inside the garage.

The Clank tells me it's probably something different. But it doesn't hurt to check.

I would get that motor back to a Merc dealer as soon as you can if it still under warranty. I hate to say it sounds like something internal broke. Could be the lower unit also. But I would roughly guess the loud clank would suggest a broken rod or piston. Hope that it will be covered under warranty.

This happened to me a couple of years ago and it made a loud clank and locked up tight. Turned out to be the lower unit.
