Most years the ice is to thin for me. I do remember reading that KCMO stock some small ponds with trout.

Hello all! Hope everyone had a safe New Years. Anyone know of any safe ice fishing opportunities around the Kansas City area? Tight lines

Haven't checked since Sunday 12.31 where I was able to find 4+ inches of clear black ice on a couple farm ponds and a slightly larger pond. Caught a good size gill and 3 big ol' largemouth and a little dink largemouth. No crappie. Not sure any are even in that pond.
That was before the bitter cold of New Years Day where I stayed home all day, so I would bet the ice is even better now.
Drove around a lot on Saturday checking things out. Watkins Mill had open water. Smithville had some coves frozen over, and even the Camp Branch arm around the W bridge was iced in....but nothing that I would call "safe". Might be better now, but I'm still avoiding it in lieu of lakes/reservoirs smaller than Watkins Mill.
Planning on going again Friday & Saturday...got a couple places picked out...both are new water to me and relatively inaccessible during summer months. Public water but no ramps and limited opportunities from the bank.

The lakes at the Reed Area have about 5 inches of ice on them. quite a few guys ice fishing today. North of the city there will be even more ice.

I’ll have to check some of those ponds around that area out. It’s been a few years since I fished there. Use to consider a few of those ponds my home lakes.
