Welcome Hocky to this bunch of fisherman. I joined in not too long ago myself and have so enjoyed reading all the great advice. I have learned so much, but I know a little,,...,,...too, and so, when I can, I put in my worth. I am going to buy a Lowrance with SI,,... soon, (Hopefully)! I am leaning heavily on the Elite 4, I believe it is a #4 anyway. I just want depth and SI and so don't need (for right now anyway) all the other features like GPS, etc. I sure can see where GPS (marking of good spots) would be a great plus and also mapping of LOZ for depths and locations where you are at, and how to get back would really be a great option too, but I don't go too far from the ramps. as I run a small boat and a 9.9 motor. Last time I fished Lake of the Ozarks was a month ago and caught them (Limit of 15,,... 9/+ inches to 11 inches) on a chartr tail/black body, tube, and the fish were at 35 fow and catching at +/- 15fow. All has changed some since then, and they may be deeper now, up towards the dam. I also have good luck using a chartr colored head,,... jig, size;16th Oz., and a minnow, hooked through the lips or through the tail, and cast over structure or around docks, and retrieve it s-l-o-w-l-y. Works for me anyway,,... or did anyway,,...when the bite was on. Good luck experiencing all that Missouri lakes have to offer. Again, WELCOME to Missouri and welcome to this forum! I ain't nobody important, but I am a Keeper!

Welcome to the board and to the State. Most of my favorite colors have been called out already.......... I do really like the lime/chartruese and orange/chartruese also...... my favorite jig head color is orange. I have also had some pretty good luck at times with the BG silver flake minnow, all silver flake, no other colors. Seems that I tend to go with white/chartruese and lime/chartruese more than others, but I use a lot of different combos. The blue ice is also a good one. Can't go wrong with black/chartruese, especially at Truman. These are my opinions.....everyone is different in thier favorites.

Like many others white and chart is my go to color for every style of bait. As far as electronics go I think hummingbird works a little better if you have the Ipilot but I'm not sure if thats the case? I've never had a fancy finder but want one and plan to have one soon. I seem to do okay with out them but I don't fish many new lakes either. Lake of the Ozarks is a good lake but I wouldn't be on it too much in the summer unless your way up the Osage arm. Your pretty close to Mark Twain and it's a good reservoir as is Truman. I used to live in Columbia when I was an undergrad and if you like going out to eat every now and again, check out The Jazz. It has great live jazz music ever night with awesome southern creole food. I also recommend Bangkok Gardens on Cherry st down town. Get the number 13 and it will change your life. Don't try the coconut curry though. Both places two can eat for 20 bucks no problem. If your ever around this area and you need a partner drop me a line I'm usually pretty handy around Lake O, Pomme, or the Pomme arm of Truman.

I just bought a Humminbird 596c HD DI unit after a lot of internet checking/reading reviews. Got it online from Hodges Marine ... they have had the best price ( $355 ) I've seen. Were very nice to work with/quick delivery. I also wanted to exchange the transom transducer for a trolling motor transducer ( at no cost ) and the Humminbird representative ( Rashonn ) was very helpful. Now that I have all the parts, all I have to do is get it installed! The instruction manual seems pretty easy to understand. You can look at it online in the Humminbird website.

Welcome Hocky.....hope your user name isn't one of your passions....we don't get much hockey here, lol. You've probably figured out that all colors are good as long as there is some chartreuse!

Not bad, tho, to come in and open TWO cans of worms with one post! Asking the best colors and best electronics will get you a thousand different opinions!

Good luck and glad to have you

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! To Danny W., 'The Jazz' is one of our favorite places to eat. Great food, great prices! We are still scouting the entire MidMo area and we find something new every time we venture out. I am really looking forward to getting out in the new boat and so is my wife. She grew up on the Mississippi in Iowa and not afraid to say she is a river rat. When ever we get close to LOZ she kind of goes in to a trance. Anyway, thanks again!

It looks like I will be going with the Humminbird. I am a technology geek and I work in the computer industry. After doing some research it appears that Humminbird offers an application called Humminbird PC which allows you to manage way points and integrates them with Google Earth.

When I came down I brought my little StarCraft with me and the wife and I fished some of the smaller lakes in the Columbia area. We did pretty good mostly with the LMB, but the crappie didn't have much size. In September my brother-in-law and I got a guide and went out on LOZ and had great time. We both got our limit on some great crappie. Now that I have been introduced to the wonderful fishing down here I needed (wanted) a better boat, so I upgraded the starcraft and I think the wife and I are ready to venture out on some of the bigger lakes. The only question I really have is what color of tubes should I get for starters? I know there are all kinds of tubes out there, but if you were buying tubes, what are the must have colors? BTW: We have an '06 16.5 ft Lund in the garage now . I have a few years to retirement, but I didn't want to buy another one. So if anyone wants a ride and willing to show me around on any of the lakes, drop me a note. One more question, Lowrance or Humminbird?
Hi Hocky, I'm from Iowa but fish more in Missouri then I do in Iowa the fishing and lakes are so much nicer then in Iowa I've only fished Mark Twain Lake and it's real nice, the crappie are good size also we don't keep anything under 10" and the biggest my son caught was almost 17.5", want to make it to some other lakes down there but I have a hard time leaving Twain. I have lakes that are 30 min drive from me, but i will make the 3hr drive to Twain first the fishing and people are great around there. It's only about 10 miles difference then from Columbia to LOZ. If you ever want to head up that way I am willing to show you around and if you don't want to bring your boat, your more then welcome to ride with me. I have a 19.5 Charger so plenty of room. I will be down there the first time this year March 28 for 4 days till the first of April and then about every weekend or every other weekend so look me up if you ever get plans to head up to Twain.Have A Nice Day And Good Luck Fishing
