Default First time on my own at LOZ 9-10

Well I got a call on Friday afternoon from the boat place and they said to come pick my boat up it was ready! SWEEET! only took 3 weeks! Only problem is now my front fish finder dont work! Dang!

Anyway I went on to LOZ this morning nice and early. Figured I had to get my feet wet some how. Started fishing shallow stumps and whatever structure I could find. Was doing ok on that pattern all day at 4 feet or less of water at all times. Water still pretty murky though. Managed to catch a mixed bag on my first trip out.
10 crappie over 9 inches, tons smaller
    15 Striped/hybrid bass 15 inches or longer
10 Striped/hybrid bass 10 inches or under, tons of these little guys in back water areas bustn on the shad on the surface, easy to find
1 channel cat 3lbs, still dont know how I landed it on my ultra light, lol
    4 drum, DOH!
    1 Large mouth bass 2lbs.
And one young soft shelled turtle I was playing with on a log as I was taking a water break, he bit off the end of my grub, lol

As the rain clouds moved in the shad started forming large schools, and the Strippers/hybrids and other fish were tearing them up, and even saw some crappie in on the action.

All in all it was a good trip, now just to get a replacement for my front fish finder.

One of the Striped bass I managed to remember and take a picture of.

The creek and shallow water bite has backed off a bit since we were up there and the bigger fish have backed off into a bit deeper water but overall it sounds like you had a good day.

Yea I kinda figured deeper water would yield more quality crappie. But without a front depth and fish finder it is real hard to search for spots in deeper water, that was my main reason for staying shallow. I was the only boat left in the area by the time I had left, and if there were a couple more people fishing at the time they could have really cleaned up as the fish were hitting top water baits like crazy.

It was a good day, got out and got to fish finally after getting the boat back. Like I said I am still new to the LOZ and it takes time to learn areas and also what the fish like day to day.

Also I think they let some water out yesterday as well, or something happened, as the water dropped at least 2 feet by the afternoon, where as in the morning it was higher.

Looks like you were busy catching fish with that list. It gets pretty tough fishing with out that fish finder, especially not knowing what depth your fishing at.

Yea I had to keep going back to the wheel to see the depth and fish finder back there as it still worked. But for the striper and hybrids they were easy to find just follow the blow-ups on the shad. But the water was getting real shallow so I dont think I will be doing it again soon, have to find deeper water to find better fish now that the cooler weather is coming.

Thanks Double D! Like I said I was not doing real well on just crappie, got lucky on finding the bass as I was taking a water and sandwhich break in the sad at an entrance to a cove. The lightening is what made me stop and load up and leave. Otherwise I would have stayed after them till it got later in the evening.
