Rough Day @ Smithville

I took my granddaughter out today and I really feel sorry for her! I'm used to the skunk smell, but she was expecting ol Pop to put her on some fish...I let her down. Minnows, jigs, nothing worked for us....hope she wants to go again some day!!

It's always great to be with them...absolutely! And I would have taken her to Watkins if I had any trust in my truck getting me in and out of there, but the last time I was there, I think I had to drive half way across the lake with my truck before the boat would float. This 2 WD might get me in.....but I just don't know if it would get me out! At least at Watkins, she could have caught a few....dinks, for sure, but fish.

When I was younger, Grandad would take me fishing and those skunk days weren't much fun and I'd get frustrated .. when I look back now though, some of the best days I spent with my Grandad were the days when the fish weren't biting (on Watkins Mill actually). Catching fish isn't the important part of it .. spending time with her and just talking is the important part.

Glad you & her got out and I'm hoping you two get into some serious fish next time out .. good job Ol Pop!

Best of luck next time with your granddaughter.

I'm going out tomorrow with my wife's dad. He's been through 4 bouts of cancer and has recently been told he has 12-18 months left. He wanted to come down to fish with my wife and I. We won't be out for long as his stamina isn't what it once was. So any insight into catching them around midday tomorrow or later would be much appreciated. He's really a very good fisherman, but like anyone off their home water, it's sometimes tough.

Vic, I can't wait for my grandkids to get old enough to go out fishing. The oldest will be 3 in August, so she is fast approaching the time to go. I'll probably start out on a good old farm pond just to see her reaction and not have her get real bored real quick....kinda like me when they get a case of lock jaw at Schmittville Lake. I bet you guys had a great time on the water.

Embo....if you are headed to the lake with your father-in-law, the first place I would go would be under one of the bridges. It's shady and unless the wind is howling out of the north or south, it's usually very comfortable. Try either the 1st or 2nd pillar from either the left or right side of any of the bridges and it may put you close to the edge of the channel. Although, it sounds like the best bet these days is going to be after dark fishing with the old green light.

My first trip out with her a couple of years ago was at a pond.....and she had the time of her life!! But we all know the frustration of taking someone out, whom we really want to do well, whom we really want to love our sport, and then getting that ol skunk smell on them....dang!!
