    Default Sunday at Watkins Mill

Filtered sunshine and only a light breeze this afternoon. I'm off work tomorrow and it's supposed to be just as nice, if not better, so wanted to make sure the boat was running okay after the winter and all the kinks were worked out.

I was thinking of heading to Smithville tomorrow cuz I keep thinking its gotta turn on soon. Seeing people's reports from today...maybe not?

Put in at around 4:00p and tooled around looking for fish on the brushpiles on the east side heading toward the dam. Found a few chips in deep (20') water close to the bottom, but not much else. Found a break line that went from about 6' to about 18' and tried casting into the shallows and retrieving over that break. No luck.

Water temp was 58-59. So we decided to head to the west side of the lake and see if we could find anything over there. We headed to that first cove off the dam on the west side. The water wasn't any warmer, but it certainly got more sunlight. We were at the mouth of the cove and started casting toward the north-west point. In about 10 minutes we had a 10", an 11" and a 13"! (All males.) They absolutely smacked it.

The bite tapered off pretty quick after that and there were so many weeds over there that I was getting fuzzed every cast practically. Would've loved to have stayed longer but wasted too much time on the east side and had to pack it up.

We were using 1/8 oz roadrunners with black/chart tails.

Pretty happy with these fish since this lake is stunted so bad.... There were probably 6-8 boats out there this afternoon.

Good work on some dandy slabs! Congrats.
We do not want the gift of a fish; neither do we expect a lesson on fishing; what we direly need is a chance to fish

Man that is some serious gansta-lookin crappie pose, Joe!!!! Thanks for the post. I wish I was off too. I may try to go over on Friday. I'm Jones'n for some thump!!!!!

What's the group consensus.....I would think Watkins has to turn on a week or so ahead of Schmittville just because of the size of the lake and h2o temp.
I believe in catch and release.....right into the grease!!!!!
