Hey Strahm. Welcome to the forum. I graduated from NWMSU in 05 and Mozingo is where I found my love of fishing but I haven't been back to fish since. I'll be making the trip back this summer for sure. I didn't have a boat back then, so you're at an advantage.

That lake can produce some solid bass even fishing from the bank. There are a couple old sunken road beds, one at the end of 230th street and the other at the end of Lantern Road, both accessible from the East side of the lake. There's also a cove that we used to walk to and bank fish off 240th street that was our best spot for bass. Those road beds would be a good place to start for crappie as they're tree lined and you can even use them as a boat ramp if I recall and probably have some varying depths. I only bass fished from the bank but caught a few nice crappie on spinner baits on Lantern Road. There's a bait shop off Liberty Rd and the guy was always friendly and will be knowledgeable. Someone mentioned the 102 River off 136 Hwy, which is right on the way to Mozingo, get some dough bait and sit under the bridge to catch catfish and carp. We did it a few times and had some decent luck, nothing great but always caught a few. I fished the water treatment plant once and threw everything I had at them, but no luck and never tried again.

I've got another spot for you to try as well not for crappie but bass. There's a great pond that's actually on school property that produces bass in good numbers, you can fish b/t classes, I did! It's literally less than a half mile from Owens Library! Never caught anything big, but always a lot every time. I took Casting and Angling as my 1 hour gym credit and we fished this pond a couple times and the teacher said anyone from out of state didn't need a license b/c the land was owned by the school (I'd double check as that was 5+ years ago). Get on google maps and find County Club Road and Northwest Dr intersection on the west side of campus, right by the inter-mural softball fields. The pond is north of the ball fields and is accessible by a pretty narrow service road you can drive down or park at the end and walk. The west bank has a lot of good trees laying in the water, pick up some senkos and swimming senkos on a lighter crappie rod and hold on!!!

Good luck with this semester and when you're not studying, get out catch some fish!!! PS - I call Smithville my home on the weekends!

wow thanks for all the info.
ive never thought about the pond over there, actually never even noticed it. sounds like it should be a good place to catch some bass.

ive also gone to some of the same places at mozingo that you were mentioning, but mostly was just driving around and exploring the new town, ill have to go back to the submerged road beds once it gets a little warmer.

for my casting and angling class, we just fished in colden pond. there was rarely a day that someone didnt catch a bass, but there was also nothing caught that was over 7 inches, it was good that we were cathcing something, but it got boring pulling in the same sized bass every day. especially using the schools junky rod and reel (since i could never remember to bring mine back from home)

thanks again, let me know if your coming up to mozingo anytime this spring and maybe i can take you out on my boat. its old and junky but it gets the job done....usually ha ha

My brother and I fish Mozingo regularly. Any time after the ice goes out you should be able to get into them. Get a map of the thae lake. It shows all the brush piles they put in when they built it. Most are on the old river channel. Fish right on the tops of the brush and you should do real well. Also keep your eyes open and you'll see the other spots thast aren't on the map. There will be guys fishing them regularly.
The best colors we have found are red head black body and chart tail and orange body and chart. tail. We fish mostly 1/6 ths and 1/8 oz jig. Hope this helps. There is also a guy from st. joe on here that fishes it alot. maybe he can help you also

Glad to help Strahm and I forgot to say, great choice in schools. I should also mention, I used to fish for bass back then but now I'm almost exclusively a crappie guy! Like Augiedog55 says get a lake map, that will help out a ton. I'll pm you if I get up that way this spring.

Old and junky is no stranger to me, I fish out of an 83 bass tracker that isn't pretty but gets the job done. Never fished Colden Pond, didn't think it was deep enough to have a population of fish.

    "Casting and Angling class"??

Can you test out of that and get college credits?

Who gets to teach that class?! Man, what a gig that must be!

Yeah, casting and angling is a 1 credit hour class to fill your gym requirement at NWMSU. One of the assistant football or baseball coaches taught it when I was there. He used to live out west and fly fished a lot of the mountain streams. I learned a ton about fly fishing, how to cast, tie knots, etc, great class.

You're right, that would be a great gig!

i wish the class was helpful when i took it. the guy didnt teach us a single thing. he handed us a pole, and sent us out to the pond. the poles they gave us rarely casted, so we just stripped some line out and basically used them like cane poles. pretty sad we have to pay for a class that teaches us nothing, and doesnt even give us equipment to be able to teach ourselves
