Welcome to the world of Crappie fishing. I only joined the ranks of crappie fishmen a couple of years ago. I went from 2 very large tackle boxes Bass fishing to 1 small one crappie fishing box. But more rods and something I never thought I would have in a boat of mine, rod holders.

Yeah I've already gone out to buy some new tackle for Crappie. Thought I'd change the rod and reel I've been using.

What do you guys think of a light weight 5.6 rod with a small Wally Marshall spinning reel? Seems most of the crappie in Wappapello are on the small side. Thought I might get better feel with a very light rig.

It will be awhile before we are ready for tournament fishing but I'll bet it would be fun.

I perfer the long rods 6' to 7' range, I think you can throw them more accurately at spot with the long rods vs short rods. (it may all be in my head too) I have been buyin the micro-lite light action rods at BPS. The run $40 if you buy them at the store but the have a deal online for $30. They have some nice reel sets that dont move when you tighten them down. There is nothing more funny that friends of mine that go out and buy $100 loomis rods and then put tape on the reel to hold it in place.

Dont worry the tourament wont have to be for money... it could all be for fun and a meet and greet.

you should really look into spider rigging at wappapello. the majority of fish that are caught there (outside of the spawn) are caught this way. use the search key at the top and you can find a lot of info on it. i learned to fish wappapello while using this method and haven't ever made a trip over there without a least doing it some. during the hot summer and cold winter (coming up) this is a great way to catch your limit in a short amount of time. just troll the river channel banks near bends, breaks and other changes in the contour(usually 8 to 16 ft. will be holding fish). in pre-spawn and post-spawn, try trolling the creeks and creek channels. hope this helps. good luck

i haven't really put the effort into it like i normally would just because of all of the brushpiles there is available. i may be wrong but i wouldn't think it would be as effective as trolling core lakes because the majority of the fish will be relating to the man-made brush instead of the structure (channel breaks, bends, stumps, sunk roads, etc.) they relate to on other lakes, and spider-rigging brush is possible but can be a real pain. i'm sure i'll give it a try sometime soon though.

No, no the funny thing is when i kick the 100 dollar rod in the lake. I think the longer rods are better too. Forgot to tell you I saw this couple Monday at the lake and it made me sick, they would pull up to a dock and tie up to it and even get out on it. The whole time they would keep watch and see if anybody was lookin..... I threw em a 4 footer as we left the lake

Thanks. Will give the "spider rigging" a try. Have you ever crapie fished Clearwater Lake?
