I would like to, but I doubt it. I plan on being in KC on the Friday of that same weekend to go to the sports show and Cabelas. That would be a lot of driving in one weekend. It would be good to hear someone speak on Mark Twain that really knows it well.

Well, I went Sunday and learned a few things and saw a few things from different perspectives. Overall, it was worth the trip. Larry Reid was the frist speaker I saw and he talked about a lot of peripheral information about Mark Twain and got side-tracked a lot during his talk. I was looking for more "meat and potatoes" and less storytelling and acencdotes. I did learn about using a fly-rod in a different way for crappie. I was going to tape a different type of reel onto mine to add to my rod arsenal, but now I think I'll try keeping my fly reel on and adding a mono leader. It's worth a try. He also showed us a new knot to tie jigs with that helps keep the jig horzontal.

Bennett's talk was good and he told some good stories that illustrated his points- be flexible and open minded! He does a lot of trolling, apparently. He was a patch pirate and stuck to his product lines. He focused on tournament crappie fishing, but a lot of it applies across the board.

The last speaker I saw was Wade Mansfield (I think- he was a substitute for Huffman whose father passed away). He talked about "Monster Crappie" and how to find information of fisheries surveys and where big crappie live- within ghte lake and within the country as a whole. It was an okay talk, but he started running out of talking points and might have been caught on short notice for giving the talk.

Also met Jeremy (jcd from this page) and we talked about Mark Twain a little. I'm looking forward to seeing what I'll learn from the fish this year- I usually learn something new everytime I'm on the water up there.

You did not miss any thing. The speaker they had on Mark Twain put me to sleep. He was a boring speaker and did not talk about much. The Pro crappie team (father & son) Bert Bennet was a good speaker, enjoyed him. Rick LaPoint I misssed part of his speaking time, but what I did hear it was good. Tim Huffman father passed away late last week and he was not there to speak. The best part of the weekend was I had a good time seeing my sister Saturday night. Stayed at her house.

I think the St. Louis boat show is Feb. 7-12. I heard it can be a mess what with the parking etc. St. Charles is having their inaugural boat show on January 20-22. I may go to that one instead- just to help them have a successful first year and it is closer to me. I don't know how many presentations, etc will be at each of these, but I think St. Charles should be able to put together as good a boat show as Collinsville. Some tackle shops don't get the return on their investment (time, booth costs etc.) at some of these shows though.

Bert is a good guy, he spoke with Outlaw and I after the Truman CUSA Tournament. Showed us how to set up the boat, and rods and rigging for spiderrigging. I say he talked to us for a good 45 minutes afterwards, and he still had the 5-6 hour drive back home. He also told of a good bait to use for LOZ in the winter, which I need to put to use.

    Default Patch Pirate

Gheeez- The "Patch Pirate" comment was simply a joke because he had a lot of sponsors who have him wear their logos :p . It doesn't mean he is literally a mean and nasty pirate that takes over other people's boats, loots their stuff and pillages their village  . Being sponsored doesn't mean they aren't nice- quite the opposite- they have to watch their conduct when speaking for a product line and company. (If you were there, you noticed he did tout his products quite a lot- not that there is anything wrong with that.) I even bought the book he spoke of in his seminar, and I know what to expect and how to sort through the information. His information was very helpful, but I'm simply not a big troller for crappie- but I'll probably give it a shot this summer time.
