Beagle, I never thought about cutting the jigs to make them smaller. Good idea.

I think you are right when choosing size to match what's available. Remember that the mayflies are only about 2 inches long and they begin showing up in June. I usually don't go to 3 inch until the fall.

I agree with springhill, it's all about how you dip and dunk your jig.

So what do you think there feeding on right now with no insect hatches and the shad spawn months away not to mention any kind of spawn? I can only talk from my experiance but the one I catch early usaly have pretty good size shad in them. It always make me think my 3 in. twisters and 2 in tube are to small. I will say I always by large minnows when I buy them.

Confidence in any bait you're fishin + the proper presentation for the conditions/seasons = limits.

A lot of good ideas listed below.

I have the perception that the 3" Yum Beavertails I use tend to produce bigger fish. I've also found that some times a 1.5" (With Crappie Nibbles) will produce better, not necesarily bigger than the YUM. I'll fish them both to see which are producing foremost. I often start with 1.5" on one pole and 3" on the other.

Match the hatch is said in the Walleye Circuits.
When the mayflies pop, I'll throw on the maribou jigs. I've caught some pigs on 1/64 oz fly jigs during these periods in the spring.

The thing that I've found with Crappie, is that similar size fish tend to run together. I compare it to humans how grade schoolers tend to hang out with gradeschoolers. Teenagers tend to hang out with Teenagers. By the time they get old their friends have been caught or died to natural mortality. That's why It seems like I catch my biggest crappie independent from others. It's like they pick a spot and run off any other competitors unless the competitors are big enough to run with them or hold their ground.

Another perception I have is that the bigger ones tends to hit first when pulling into a spot. Although I've had the rare occasions where I had to weed through a lot of little ones to get to the big ones in the same brush pile. (Kentucky Lake)

Every now and then though, you'll get a strange mix of scattered crappie where big and littles ones are gorging on the shad. If I may quote a friend from Dayton, "Then it's pot luck. You never know what your gonna get".

    With all that being said.
I believe Charlie if he says he up sizes the baits.

i think that color is way more important than size. presentation is also more important than size. if i can get some hits on a smaller color, i'll try the same lure but bigger to try to find larger fish...
Why do I have to press 1 for English?

I fish with the double jig set most of the time with a 3" on the bottom and a
2" up top. Sometimes I do use a bigger bait.

Most of the time I'm using SpiderWire on the reels, 15 lbs.

I have caught 14" crappie while fishing for bass using 1/2 oz. spinners baits in the bushes in May in Tn. , but my normal sized lures when fishing for crappies is 2" grubs or tubes on 6 lb. test
