How many satellites are in the GPS swarm? How many spares in orbit? And if countries really really decide to get pis*sy, how many countries have anti-sat capabilities?

Someone once asked me: "Aren't you concerned with all the gaps in your work history due to fishing?"
My response: "I am more concerned about the gaps in my fishing history due to work!"

There were (at one time) 30 satellites in the GPS constellation. 24 are active and 6 standby. There are also 2 geostationary WAAS satellites, one on west coast (pacific ocean) and one on the east coast (atlantic ocean). Both are near the equator. The original GPS satellites fell out of the sky a long time ago. What didn't fall from the sky is now space debris.

Im with the military train of thought.....(if what I see on TV is correct) too many weapons and machines and everything else seems to rely on this GPS ability. This is just another smoke and mirrors just like the recent "Gas price / oil price" rip off we just went through......

If is broke, maybe this is just PR for some more money to buy new equipment.....may be we can get in on the deal.....Obama just needs to buy all crappie.com fisherman a new HD GPS / Fish finder combo.....I believe it is a matter of national security.....

    my 2 cents....

Not much. The further north, the less the signal strength from the equator.

The atmosphere and the terrain is the big signal distorter. WAAS basically is a signal correcting system, not a positioning system.
