    Default Speed

Ok found this in a article.rolling speed is critical.

Kelly uses a hand-held Garmin GPS to track and maintain his speed.

“I usually troll between 0.6 and 0.8 mph.” he said.

At that speed, his twister-tails on a 1/24-oz. jig heads run about six or seven feet deep.
On the Ga board they say about 1 mph top speed.

you could pull two 1/8 ounce jigs at 1.3 mph with about 50 foot of line. But how how deep you want want to pull the jigs? The best way to learn how to long line is to practice. Get in 10 foot of water and adjust your speed or line till you bump bottom.

    Default Speed and distance

I think I have a plan. Here is another article.
Speed is the final factor in long-line trolling. A variable speed trolling motor is essential to making minor adjustments in trolling speed. Trolling speeds can vary from 2.5 mph on the high end to as slow as .5 mph. Most GPS units now accurately determine speed in 1/10s of a mph. A good rule of thumb is to troll at 1.0 mph and vary the speed according to where you mark fish on your sonar unit. As mentioned previously, trolling speed, jig weight, line diameter and the amount of line out are all major variables that will affect your depth of presentation. Generally speaking, a 1/16th-ounce jighead trolled 40 feet behind the boat (what I consider to be a standard cast length) on 6-pound-test at 1.0 mph will run about 8 feet deep. Consider this the equivalent of bore sighting a riflescope: It'll get you "on the paper," but to zero in you're going to need to spend some time at the range.

Well like I said, I'm sorta green at this myself - I did used to sidepull
a lot, all I did for 3-4 years, but thats a little different.

Lately when I started getting interested in longlining jigs, I asked one of
my friends who mainly fishes this way, and here's what he told me:
He said he mainly uses a single 1/16 oz jig, throws out a good cast then
another pull or two - maybe 50'?. He said he just tried to be consistent
from rod to rod. Speed, he said start about .7 mph and go up or down,
maybe from .4 to 1.0 or more. Said some days just a tenth or two makes
all the difference in catching or not. As for the depth you'll get, I think
it's a lot of just having to do it and get some experience, but I am gathering
this - I think most of what they are catching doing this are suspended fish,
kinda like me and my crankbaits. Not trying to to really crowd the bottom
or brush. But I'm still learning

    Default Tenn-Tom

I live on the Tenn-Tom but travel around and fish all the normal suspects in Ms. I would love to get in the boat with someone who has some experience at this long lining and take a lesson. I will PM you Ranger522.
You know this is what I like most about this board. People willing to help.

Well now, what do ya know. That does make sense. Keep this up for 6 months or so CH and I'll have to promote you from plain ole ignert all the way to idjit. LOL.
