Max I had a buddy fishing on the river a few years ago. It started lightning and they headed to chute on Lake Whittington. You have to go slow to navigate the chute and lightning struck his 225 hp motor on a Ranger boat. Knocked both of them out. They were ok and insurance totaled the boat. It entered the cowling and fried all electrical and exicted the transom on the jack plate. Looked like a bomb went off in the boat.

When I see lightning I haul a__. If you are trolling those 12 to 16 ft poles are ligtning rods when you pick them up.

Yeah you should go, I'm not too smart about it myself sometimes.
Took way more chances last Sat than I should have.

Looking back at some of my earlier exploits, getting caught out in the middle
of big lakes in small boats, trying to get back to the ramp, nearly sinking -

in hindsight I would have been a LOT better off to have just beached it
somewhere and hunkered down on the bank

If you see lightening, leave. Simple and easy to remember. Or you could do what I do when there's a chance of thunderstorms, invite a very tall buddy to go with you. Kind of a canary in the coal mine deal.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.

I'd fish through any storm thrown at us with you rip, old buddy. (course, thats mainly cause you are SIGNIFICANTLY taller than me!)

I'd make you stand on the bow like a figurehead and hold up one of my metal rod holders...that should keep me fairly safe. We can call it the "statue of liberty play" designed for thunderstorms!

You want to see someone walk on water...be in the boat with my dad when it even looks like it could get bad. He's outta there!

Thank you guys for your input. Intuitively I guess I "felt" like I should vacate the water during a lightening storm, but I ain't really all that smart. I will correct my behavior, and thank the Lord for protecting my dumb butt this long.

Max, I'm sending the iron from my golf bag. If you're on the lake and it starts to lightenin, hold that 2 iron over your head andyou'll be safe. Ligtenin' couldn't even hit my 2 iron.

Seriously, most lightening strikes on a golf course occur BEFORE the visable storm gets there. I usually get the Heck out of Dodge when there is thunder, even if I can't see the lightening immediately. I don't do water and lectricity real good.

    Better safe than BBQd.
