    Default New to crappie fishing!

I have been a bass fisherman a long time, but have recently picked up an interest in becoming a serious crappie fisherman. I have little knowledge about becoming a successful crappie fisherman. I have a 16ft war eagle that I duck hunt out of constantly in the winter; I bought some trolling rigs and look forward to using them to catch crappie this year. What techniques or tactics should I know to help me catch crappie in the spillway or while trolling the lake. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the site Eagle 123. We have members on this forum that will willingly share trade secrets with you on crappie fishing. We have experts in the field of spillway fishing as well as trolling. I am neither and wouldn't be much help, since I single pole the bayous and lakes of the Miss. Delta.

Thanks. I have really enjoyed this website. I live close to Arkabutla lake but try to fish Sardis more. Tips on either will be great. Thinking about trying the spillway today just to start getting the feel of crappie fishing.

Eagle, Sardis spillway is a good place to start right now. The big lake is over rule curve and the COE is dumping a lot of water.

Learning the spillway takes a while, just watch what the other folks are doing (jig size and colors, float size, etc.), and where they are fishing.

When the spillway fishing gets good, it's pretty up close and personal with folks next to you.

Went to Butla spillway the other day and didn't even get a bite. I felt that I was wasting time and was not doing something right. There were only a couple other fisherman there and they seemed to catch one every hour or so. I guess it was just slow but I still felt that I wouldn't catch anything even if they were biting. I was fishing two 1/16 oz hair jigs tied about a foot apart. Is there anything that I could have done to make it more sucessful?

    welcome Eagle,
Arkabutla is my home lake, you can find me there every other day at the least.
You said you felt like you were waisting your time. There is no such thing as waisting time fishing. so you didnt catch anything, thats ok get used to it. Just try to learn a little somthing everytime you go and those fishless days will not be as frequent after a while.
The spillway is a great place to fish so keep going and watch other people you can learn alot doing that.
If yuo have any questions about the lake send me a personal message and I will help you out all I can, but from reading your post it seems you lack a little confidence with crappie fishing, thats ok to, dont worry about it. Your confidence will grow with every fish you catch. So keep pugging away at it and you will find things starting work for you. Good luck
