New license
Effective July 1, 2023, a valid freshwater guide license will be required for any person that provides freshwater fishing guide services on any public waters in the state (north of I-10).
License applications will be available for download on July 1, 2023, on our website.
The license can be acquired in person from MDWFP Headquarters in Jackson, any MDWFP Regional Office, or by mailing applications to MDWFP. We understand the guide license rule begins July 1 and falls on a Saturday when agency offices are closed. Law Enforcement is aware of this timeline and will therefore be accommodating as guides begin acquiring the necessary licenses and decals on July 3. Didn't realize it was in the works. I've heard talk about it. I still think MS is selling itself short on out of staters. $500 for resident guides sounds good, but I think $5000 on non resident be fair for guide license. I pay the premium anytime I venture out of state and don't whine. Plus just enforce US Coast guard training across the board as a prerequisite. I'm not a guide by any means, just think MS outta step up to take a but of burden off the residents and ease it in on over to non. If don't like it stay home!

I agree, $2,000 comes short for non resident.
- Residents must show proof of residency and have a valid MS Sportsman’s License, unless exempt by state law
- Non-Residents must have a valid MS annual non-resident fishing license

Ok so say me and 3 buddies out fishing and I’m not using a pole just watching them and running livescope. Am I guiding and fishing with friends? Grey I know but I bet some will use that premise to bypass license.

Should be pretty simple. Once a guide tells a potential client. Look, I ain't got no license, no insurance or any CPR or first aid training. So if we see Mr. Green Jean's were just buddy fishing, wink wink.
The clients response should be well you ain't got my business. I figure it will work itself out. I wouldn't lie for somebody if I'm paying for a fishing trip. Not my ticket. Wonder what the punishment is if the rules are broken? I didn't see it in the article.

Yeah I don't see where this will bring in enough money for the couple dozen, maybe 100 or so fresh water guides in Mississippi to even justify the administrative cost for the State to keep up with. Like someone said above, a whole lot of grey area. There are a few known guides that are not mistakeable, but most are not very well know and keep a low key.
