Thread: Capsized boat at Hurricane

Can't imagine a boat this big with all its safety equipment would allow this to sink from a rogue wave,,,I have almost filled my ranger a time or two on Sardis ,especially at the ramp,,,, and it never sank,,,,

Lot of difference in glass and tin, glass wins~! Top heavy center console did not help matters either.

I thought same thing with the tower top. 2 back power paddles dug down when a roller came in. Swamped it then top heavy rolled it on over.

If he already had lines out the back why would the power poles be down? Y’all may be right but when I’m pulling I keep moving once they start going out. Was he not pulling?

They were drift paddles used to slow the boat down that he had on the transom of the boat.

I had a friend who hit a large wave and the jar broke the live well pump off where it went through the transom. The boat took on water faster than the bilge could pump it out. One big wave hitting the transom would have sunk it. Fortunately that didn't happen.

Sounds like he just got caught up in the perfect storm... Sorry about the loss, but glad no one was hurt!

Neil normally doesn't use the rear tie downs when trailering the boat. The day before this incident, one of his clients tied the rear of the boat to the trailer without Neil knowing it. The following morning one of his clients was backing him in and was told to back up until the boat floats. He backed so far that water was pouring over the transom. Neil was yelling at him but I guess he didnt hear him. They pulled the boat back up and unstrapped the rear of the boat. Neil had recently changed out a the battery that his automatic bilge pump was connected to and whoever did it, didnt hook up the bilge pump. Apparently the sump was full of water when they idled out to the lake and with large swells from the wind and the boat sitting low, they started getting waves over the transom. Every one of these factors had to happen to cause this accident. No injuries was the most important thing, along with some valuable lessons for us all to learn.
