Default Caught a funny Striper the other day...

In of the excitement after Wednesday, I forgot about this fish till just now... Didn't get a pic, but found one that someone else took, so you can see what it was... At the time I caught it, I showed it around to the boats nearby and tossed it into the cooler... First one for me...

They are also known as MoHawk or Magnolia Crappie. I caught my first and only one so far last year. My dad has been fishing for 65 years and never caught one.

Blacknose Black Crappie .... unless you were fishing in one of the smaller state lakes that have been stocked with the Magnolia Crappie.

A Blacknose Black Crappie is a naturally occurring fish ... a regular Black Crappie with a marker gene that creates the black stripe.

A Magnolia Crappie is a hybrid Crappie ... This Crappie is a cross between the female White Crappie and the male Blacknose Black Crappie, and is most often sterile. Produced in the 1990's for stocking smaller impoundments so they wouldn't overpopulate the waters. Supposedly, they grow faster/bigger because their growth is all in their body size & not in reproduction efforts.

I take families fishing an the nick name for the stripped nose crappie is “racing crappy “
Because we normally get several more when they bite and of course the race strip.
