Thread: Pulling cranks, no thanks!

I used those plastic bone colored Hellbenders for Stripers, rigged to pull a smaller jig or swim lure behind, and have a few of them.... Never caught any crappie on that, but wasn't tryin to either....

Crappie wouldn't touch'em. I've often wondered if it was the action or the rattles that turned 'em off. If it was the rattles I've noticed some bandit 300's on eBay without rattles. Thinking about trying some of them. Has anyone tried them compared to ones with rattles on crappie?

I got a crankbait with no rattles and I never got a bite on it. So now I have zero confidence in that bait.

My grampa had the hell benders that were black with white markings . Not sure he was crappie fishing as he had to support his family during the depression . He was after all fish that had lips . Have eaten drum/gaspagoo at his house .

Those were the skeleton pattern, also found on River Runts, another very popular old crank bait... My Dad trolled River Runts on black nylon line, using a direct drive Pfleugler reel, which I still own... I also had all of the old lures, but somewhere in all of the moves I made growing up they disappeared...

Was just having a discussion this morning with a fellow member and we were reminiscing about the days of past, I didn't have any knowledge of cranks being pulled back then. My uncle owned a bait-shop there by the lake for better than 35 years and he didn't stock no cranks I don't recall.
