    Default Ultrex or ulterra ??

I'm upgrading my trolling motor from an old Minn Kota Maxxum 80 to either a Ultrex 112 or and ulterra 112. Ranger 520. I mainly crappie fish at Ross Barnett or Okatibbee and mostly by myself. The auto deploy on the Ulterra may be nice on Okatibbee since there aren't docks at the ramps. But I'm a little concerned with how the ulterra may respond when wrapped up with lily pads at Barnett. Any experience/advice on these trolling motors would be appreciated.

Ulterra will respond the same to the Lilly pads as the ultrex. I have the ultrex. I like it a lot for trolling and jigging stumps. Spot lock works alright when the winds blowing or current is present. Hate to say but I'm sure minnkota is working on a self deploy ultrex.

Something to look into with the upgraded spot lock on the Minn Kota's.

This is off a little bit, the Ultrex responds way faster then the Ulterra, now the Ulterra does fine but it is no where near quick as the Ultrex. I learned this pretty quick running HillyBillys boat with the Ultrex on it, bump the remote and that sucker turned, bump the Ulterra and you get slight ajustments.
If you like the cable drive footcontrol get the Ultrex, I hate them so the Ulterra won hands down and I wouldn't want to be without self-deploy and stow.
Every ramp I have ever used at Okatibee has a dock at the ramp......

Don't know about Lilly pads but I do know that when there are 2-4 rollers on a lake or a bunch of water fleas running around the self deploy and stow is indispensable .

How far away from the boat will the remote work on the ulterra?

Sure is a lonely feeling when you float your boat off the trailer and the Ulterra won’t deploy. I have both, and like them both. Depends on how you’re fishing.

Both are great units. It’s more about personal preferences and uses.

Rees, early last spring when water was low at Okatibbee, Gin Creek landing, I had to back my truck into the water to float the boat. Then wade to the trailer tongue, climb in and motor around to the dock while people waited for me to move my truck. With the ulterra, do you think I could float the boat off then spot lock it, go park then come back and remote control it around to the dock? Is that distance too far?
