I run a happy troller on my 70hp johnson and i can get down to around .4mph. I troll for trout average rpm to keep me at my .9mph is about 900 rpm and I run like that for 8 hours at a time when done kick up plane no bogging no hesitation. The wont work good on a 2 stroke is wrong. If the motor is in good repair and tuned properly gas and oil mixed right it is not a issue.

I've never run a plate but have a couple buddies who did years ago."Back in the day" two strokes and a plate or a trolling motor was your only option.

Sounds like a good problem to have, I remember when I could do those things prior to about 7 years ago or so. Now I couldn't stand it, I would be to worried thinking, I wonder what them crappie are doin''.. Been saying for two years we were going to throw out some jugs while trolling in the summer for crappie, still hasn't happened yet, used all the dang noodles for double rigs

I have ran my 2 outboards 2 strokes with happy trollers for years. 40hp mercury 15years and a 115hp yamaha for 3 years never had any troubles wth motors. I troll on party barges running at .8 to 1.4 mph with 20 poles out.

I tried using the happy hopper that came with my boat and zi found they simply bend and crack after a few fast takeoffs without pulling her up. especially with my 200'efi merc attached to it,,,

Ran one for 3-4 years on my Merc. No problems at all. Just make sure every so often to put it in neutral and rev it up. Motor starts running rough and needs blowing out

When I was fishing my 60hp Yamaha trolled right at 1.7 mph with a 5 gal bucket out each side. Cut a 2 1/4 in hole in the center . One really good thing about using your big motor, you aren't at the mercy of the wind near as bad IMO. Like Rees said, run the snot out of it on the way in and treat with seafoam.
