Pulling Jigs with a cork?
Hey guys have any of you ever pulled jigs with a cork above it? The reason I ask is I have an uncle that is just wearing them out right now in a small lake by my house thats not very deep doing this. The lake is only about 6 ft at deepest and probably is 4 ft average. It has some really nice perch in it and he has been filling up coolers these past few years in the winter doing this. He has shown me his set up and I have tried time and time again unsuccessfully. All he does is tie a 1/8 oz head and tube jig on to a line with a swivel about 2ft above it. The he puts a cork about 2ft above the swivel and pulls them( usually 4 poles at a time) as slow as his trolling motor will go on constant. He says he never stops when he catches a fish. He just reels em in slow. I usually push jigs but with the way he is catching them I wouldn't mind learning this technique. Anybody ever do this?

The concept is pretty well known as long lining with a cork, it gives you a little better depth control. And gets your bait away from the boat. Works great in shallow lakes, keeps you from dragging bottom. Plus you have more speed options.

I do it when the bite is real light or mainly when there's alot of wave action going on. You're baits won't bounce up 2-3 feet each wave, only a few inches. Leve just enough slack in the line to the cork it doesn't pull it out of the water. Works great. Of course you'll be called a Yankee LOL

They do that type of longline trolling at Weiss ... during the early pre-spawn period ... and flat wear out the Crappie, sometimes.
I've done it with one pole (of the three I was Spider Rigging from the back of the boat) and usually caught more fish on it than the other two !! Just looked for the cork now & then, and when I couldn't find/see it ... set the hook !!That was when I was using 10' rods and the bite was lite and not so easily detected (like it is on my 14' rods I'm now using).
