For the short line on long rods I catch the line in my left hand and push the release button with my right, let the line slid through my hand. I use to do pretty good at flipping into brush with a 10 to 16 ft rod.

Good advice here on the reels. Figure out what works best for you and purchase the best quality with which you are comfortable. My advice on using long poles and short lines would be to pull the fish toward you a little by a little hand over hand action, pushing the butt of the rod toward the back of the boat. Then use a lightweight, long handled net that you can work one-handed. Ego makes my favorite.
