I fish Arkabutla a lot in the spring (wading). Three pound crappie are not rare and four pound crappie are not unheard of. In the early part of my fishing which starts in late February to about March 15th, I usually catch more big fish but I throw craps a lot of times. I like to be the first to drop a jig in front of that big boy when he swims into shallow water. You might go to a spot three or four days in a row and do nothing and then on that next day; "bam", there they are. The number one problem with catching fish at Arkabutla though is the way the Corps can drop that water. I've seen them drop it as much as 8 tenths a day (when they want to) and you can imagine what that will do to a fish. That's why it is by far the toughest of the four I-55 lakes.

Another thing about Arkabutla I forgot to mention; you can be zipping across what you think is wide open water and hit the bottom. This is a very shallow lake and with the lake level as it is now (about 218) you could spend a lot of time pushing out of a shallow spot. I waded that lake Friday and it's about three feet lower than I like it.
