Probably crawled in on the boat motor. That snake is colored like a copperhead but I would think that it is a water moccasin. They aint poisonous, but if bitten by one I'll bet you'll get sick enough to go to the hospital.
Happened to me in broad daylight, in the middle of a wide channel on Ft Loudon lake. I saw the snake (water moccasin) glidin' along, told my fishing buddy to keep an eye on it, it went under the boat, or so we thought. Waited for it come up/out on the other side of the boat, it didn't, we went back to fishin', and then, SURPRISE, it's layin' in middle of the boat near the console. Talk about gettin' excited, whew..
GO BIG ORANGE !
I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

they all look like rattle headed copper moccasins to me
I've had several run-ins with snakes over the years. None of which I care to repeat. The most memorable was on Bedford Lake. A High School buddy and I went out there and rented one of those flat bottoms they used to have laying on the shore line between the ramp and the pier. He got on one end and I got on the other and as we were picking up the boat i saw a dark thick tail inches away from my foot. Well i dropped my end and got half way up the hill before I heard him cussing me for dropping the boat. He though i was acting like a little girl lol. So him not beliving me, flipped the boat over and the was a huge cottonmouth under it. Dang thing was longer than my leg and bigger around than a 20 oz. coke bottle, with the meanest diamond shaped head I'd ever seen. Well with him now standing beside me half way up the hill we decided to get a different boat.
i dont like snakes and i cant tell one from the other so,i believe that snake is a water headed copper rattler lol
GOD loves fishermen, the earth is 75% water
Looks like a harmless banded water snake to me. I've had (both) them and cottonmouths in the boat with me at one time or another on the Cape Fear River here
in North Carolina... and like some of you have already said... a snake is a snake is a snake... and I don't much want any of 'em in the boat with me. They will crawl
right in your boat with you... or they might drop out of an overhanging tree when you are working the banks, laydowns and overhanging tree cover or shade.
"Just Like Iron Sharpens Iron... So it is that One Man Sharpens Another Man." Proverbs 27:17
My first boat was a 10ft jon and a 12lb thrust TM. All that power. The car battery that I had was great for a while, but lost power pretty quick. Lake Fredrica had a cluster of oaks on the back side that bordered an orange grove. Thank God I was alone that day. As I worked the bull rushes and got closer to the oaks I heard something that wasn't normal, didn't see anything out of the ordinary, and kept fishing while getting closer to the oaks all the time. As I began to get close to those trees, I heard that sound again and this time there was something to see. One had his head over the side trying to get in with me, and there was 6 or more others coming my way from where the bull rushes met the oak branches met the water. I can safely say I know what fear and adrenaline feel like. I turned on the TM and grabbed the paddle to hit the first one, getting lucky on the first shot and he fell back over the side. The others never got close enough to get in, and I wasn't giving second chances. These were all cottonmouth's, big and unhappy, with the diamond shaped head they are famous for. That lake held big fish and I never went to get any more of them, or the snakes. In later years I helped build an apartment complex after the developer bought the grove and some of the guys said they were going to come back Saturday and fish the lake, and I told them of my experience. They had stories of their own Monday morning and all of them said they had seen the snakes but not as close as I did. I haven't felt the same about small boats and small lakes ever since, and fished with a .22 with rat shot for a long time after that.
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
that is a very dangerous rattlemouth cottonhead can make you hurt yourself real bad
Camped out with 3 friends one night on the Elk River near Fayetteville about 24 or 25 years ago. We decided to get 2 flat bottom boats out and go for a midnight trip down the river. Somebody said I keep hearing noises in the water and somebody turned on a lantern or flashlight. Then Oh My Goodness, we noticed we were surrounded by snakes all over the water. We could see snakes and snakes eyes everywhere and more was down river so we knew we had to get to paddling back up river.Never camped there again or floated the Elk after dark again since. In my mind, it was at least 40 snakes all around us coming to see what we was in the water. I still dont know what kind they were, but I was sure enough scared to death. Biggest thing, back then, most of us just sit in the dark as we only had 1 or 2 guys who even had a light with us. Think about paddling a flat bottom boat back up through what seemed like 100 snakes all around you just laying on top of the water. They may have all been harmless, but I remember how scared we all was that night. Thinking back, I wonder if it had just been a hatch of little ones or something in the area, and they just all took to the water. It wasnt like they was coming after us or anything, just sitting or laying out in the eddy water in the calm night.
