Thumbs up Tip of the Day - Dock/Ramp Etiquette

This has been talked about extensively right here on crappie.com, but I wanted to make this point one more time and be sure everybody gets to see this because it is such an important topic.

Ever get to the ramp to see a guy whip in behind you while you are pulled ahead out of the way unhooking everything, and they pull down into the ramp behind you and then proceed to get his boat ready for launch there? This guy don't even realize he just ticked you off and started your fishing trip off on a wrong note by cutting line basically. This is NOT the way to do it folks. This won't allow a boat who is leaving that is ready to go home ramp access till you are out of the way either.

The proper way is to be close, but out of the way just enough so those who are ready for launching, backs in, launches in seconds and backs out of the way. If everybody would follow this pattern, the wait time is almost unnoticed.

Just so everybody knows, I rarely find this a problem with boaters who frequent the lake quite a bit, but from time to time, even then you will get your head chewed off if you try and politely ask an older gentleman who has done it this way for 54 years to please buckle down his boat outside of the ramp area. In this case, it's usually better to grin and just bare it than to get into it with them. If they have not seen the need to get out of the way when possible in 54 years of docking you won't be able to change them with a few words, I promise you.lol. This act is not just done by guys who have been around for years, its also frequently done by those who are young and new to properly docking boats.

Dock problems are usually caused by unexperienced boaters who decided that spring day to go try and see what happens if they go to the lake. It's the folks who are not prepared at all before they get there, then try to prepare while in the way and just dont know any better, who cause most of the ramp headaches. These people may be the ones who would see the light if you show them.

Today's tip of the day, is this. If you can, please do everything you can to prepare for the launch outside of the immediate ramp area. This allows everyone around to get in and out without a long wait time and keeps things flowing and smooth on busy ramp days.Until next time, this is GCF saying let's be courteous of each other, enjoy the water Gods given us to fish, and let's go fishing............. :D

Good advise Toby, and it's especially true now that we are a ramp short at Woods. Last week-end and Monday you needed a number system there!

Great advise! Almost had that happen to me again last weekend but I had a bigger truck! I have seen a guy lock his keys in the truck on the ramp and even seen vehicles break down right in the middle of loading.:D Oops that was me! Again I will stress. Go to Normandy at Barton Springs, Saturday afternoon in June about 2pm, take your lawn chair and enjoy the show. Great entertainment and they let these people breed! Got to have fun with it and not let it bother you. Going to the lake is for fun not stress. I have enough of that at work.

Thumbs up March 13th Tip of the Day column

Well folks, I just want to take this opportunity to let you know that I will not be doing the Tip of the Day, nearly as much as before. The time is changing tonight and the fish are biting, so it's time for me to take the tips I have learned myself and start applying them. I want to thank everyone for the encouraging pm's I have received. I promise you, that kept me going, even when I was all tipped out.lol

I may occasionally throw one out there, but just will not be doing them daily anymore. It's time to go fishing, so let's all get our gear ready and go fishing. Thanks again for supporting TOTD. May run them again next spring. :D GCF

Go fishing and have a great time. I saw him in action this Saturday and he caught 4.5 times more fish than I did and 10 times more keepers. Not much competition here though.:D I am sure that he will have more tips as the year goes on.
