Default Looks like ice fishing season is about over

The 10 day forecast is for high 30's with some temps close to 50 next week. Add in the rain and the 5" of ice I was on Sunday will be either unsafe or gone. At least I got out once and caught a few fish, that's better than I've done the last 2 winters. Come on spring!

    It's about over here too!

The only part I miss about ice fishing is, when I'm already out in the warm shanty, looking at a video screen of my jig in the water, in those clear still waters under the ice, while feesh swim by with me jigging the bait and getting them to bite. The going to and fro from the ice shanty, I'll pass on!

Rained here all night and just like that poof, 6 inches of snow gone. I’ll pass on the getting out in it as well.

Got out myself Monday, before the warmup and rain started.... Already cleaning up my gear to put away for next year...long range temps don't look promising. Tough time of year. Too much ice on the lakes, too much ice flow on the river to get a boat in... but not enough to walk on. Jerry is right, come on spring!

Yeah, sometimes the walk there and back can be tough. I tend to travel light, a jet sled to haul my 6" auger, my 18v Ridgid drill, my Vexilar FL18 and a bucket with 3 rods and an ice scoop. Oh, and a thermos of coffee. Bait is a Skoal can with a few dozen maggots. If it's real cold, say below 20*, I might switch the jet sled for a portable shanty, mine is a Dave Gentz Fish Trap, and throw in a small propane heater. Usually I like to fish in the open and "hole hop".

My on ice fishing is exclusively spearing! If there's good ice I'll venture to LSC for a day or two of perch spearing while waiting for northern pike, otherwise I'll be found watching over a 3' x 5' hole waiting for a hungry or curious pike to check out my decoys.

I can tell you that there are some BIG crappie that occasionally pass through the hole when I'm on parts of Saginaw Bay but they've generally not been receptive to my jig offering.

Hopefully there will be a cold snap to salvage a little bit of ice season before spring.

Didn’t get out at all sadly! Haven’t been out in 5 years

Got out a couple times last year, zero this year. Did get new chargers for my Marcum and Garmin units. Still need to see if my shanty will fit in the back of my Jeep! Stay safe out there!

Looks like it might be an early year of walleye jigging on the Detroit River.
