I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of july.

With the weekend open, my family wanted to make a trip to Houghton lake. The water was hot, about 85 degrees and the bite was even hotter, we couldn't keep the skeeters off of us.

Our first day up, 3rd of july, was a slow day of chores and catching up. To long since we had all gotten together and we all had a lot to say.
But FishnSips and I wasted no time in getting on the water and trying for fish.

We spent more time cleaning weeds from our lines than fishing. All for a few small dink perch rolling along the weed edges and drop offs. The heat got to us we took off towards a sandy shore and hopped in the water.

The dog might not be happy swimming, but she seemed grateful after a forceful dip in the water. We talked and decided that we would try our luck from the dock and wait for the evening. Just goofing around with a gob of worm and a jig produced a proper pan sized bluegill. But the skeeters came out in force! A double coating of deet seasoning and they were still coming so I called it and retired for the night.

The next day, the 4th, we tried trolling in the AM but no luck, the wind laid down and the heat became oppressive, so we took the fishes advice and just stayed in the water. We were determined to get a few and went out again with 40 minutes to dusk. We hit a new spot of drop offs and weed edges and pulled a nice largemouth that went back and two 11 inch crappie right at dusk. The fireworks show started up shortly after, obviously celebrating our success, but the resonating booms put the fish to bed and no amount of casting produced more for us.

It was a good weekend with good people. Our neighbors celebrated gaining two great grand babies. Honestly, one of the best 4ths I've ever had.

Hope you all had a great 4th of July too.
