Man, was it hot yesterday. I weeded my garden in the morning before it got too bad and even turned on the central air, which I never do. My kids are out of state or were working so I did a fathers day cook out by myself. Well, Knucklehead was here, too, but he wanted to stay in the house. I hope it cools down some this week.

    Yes it was hot out!
We didn’t do anything for Fathers Day except get ready to head down to Florida this morning for the Father in laws funeral right after Judy’s meeting with her Dr.
We are driving down, just the way it worked out which means if there is a day I’m not needed to help out, I’ll drive down and see my old friend in Stuart, Fl maybe do some offshore fishing. If that happens I’ll be sure to take pictures.

And bring back more King Fish so Judy can make dip.

I overdid the quantity of meat I grilled. Two chicken breast, two pork tenderloins, 10 brats and a package of Oscar Mayer wieners. I have leftovers for the entire week.

Planning is everything... Right up until it doesn't work out!

Prior to heading to crappie camp, I had everything ready to go over at the management property I work on for my neighbor. I had all of his fields cut and ready for spray. He was to spray them while I was gone and have them ready for when I got back (which he did).

I got back on Wednesday and by the evening, I worked 2.5 hours with the disc. I got up early Thursday morning and spent 6.5 hours discing and then running a tiller on more than 5 acres of property in different areas. This is a 98 acre tract of land. Fishing was on the menu for Friday and the property owner (who lives in Taylor) had instructions to spread the perscribed amount of Nitrogen, Potash, and Potasium so that I could plant on Sunday morning. I knew they were calling for rain Saturday (which it did) so that was going to be out. Plus, the rain would put the fertilizer in the ground.

I get a call Friday evening and the neighbor is at the cabin. Says his son (a State Trooper) was getting ready to go to work when the power went out. He looks outside and his power line is laying in the road. He jumps in the patrol car and heads off looking for the person but doesn't find him. We assume it was someone hauling equipment that was too tall. At any rate, it snaps off the power pole. By Saturday, he had a temp pole installed but was tired as heck and would not have time until this week to be back up and spread fertilizer. The problem... I have the last of my corn (late planting) that needs to go in and I would hate like heck to have to change implements 10 times in the next three days.

Being the good guy that I am, I jumped on the tractor yesterday morning, got some spraying done on my farm, and then put the 500lb spreader on and headed to his cabin. I made a phone call to him asking for the recipe of ingrediants per field. To which I got the "oh man, you don't have to do that".... "I really appreciate it", "you don't know what this means"... "I have some things going on right now that I cannot talk about"

After a few minutes, he steps outside. He says that, ontop of the fact that he has been working away from home (theft investigator for DTE), the electric issue at the cabin, but he is dealing with personal stuff. His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and is scheduled to have a double mastectomy later next week. Mind you, I was not doing the work because I knew of an issue, I just sensed that something was going on and he needed my help. NOT because I make an hourly wage, but because he is my neighbor, I watch after his land, and I do things for people that would recipricate it to me. I have very few friends so the ones I do have, I will do anything for.

I spent a total of 7 hours on my tractor yesterday in the 96 degree heat index. I went through 3 full bottles of gatorade, and 11 bottles of water. I spread a total of 700lbs of 46-0-0 urea, 500lbs of potash, and 250lbs of potassium. I planted a total of 5 acres of corn and two acres of beans. Just because he isn't my father, doesn't mean he isn't someone elses father!

My original intent was to do it to get it done due to impending rain. It was because of my schedule. Had I known in the beginning, I would have done it because he needed my help. Either way, I am glad I was able to help him out and get it done for him during this hard time. One less thing that he has to worry about this week. Getting those crops in the ground was important BUT, he had other, much more important stuff on his plate. I'm sure that he didn't want to tell me because he KNEW I would do exactly what I did.

Many of us need help sometimes. Unfortunately, we are sometimes to proud to ask for it. I'm glad I could take that off his plate. That was my father's day!

I'm the same way. I will help my neighbors anytime they need the help. I have one that I pull out of the ditch at least once each winter. I like to stop and chat when I see them. Unfortunately, most want to keep to themselves. It's a different world than it was 30 years go.
