Default One last trip before deer season.

Do you know how some days, when you step outside at daylight, something hits you right between the eyes. The weather is mild and the wind is light and the forecast is for this to be a perfect day to go fishing. Well, today was one of those days. I sent Steve a text, "perfect day for fishing". He responded "sure is". My reply to that, "lets go". Within seconds my phone rings and he asks "are you serious"? As a heart attack! 90 minutes later we were launching his boat on Morrison Lake in Ionia County.

We headed to the east end and idled around till we started marking fish then rigged up with jigs and minnows, dropped the trolling motor and started long lining for crappie. Steve was first to hook up ( and second and third ) and soon we had a few nice crappie in the live well. Sort of by accident I hooked into a decent perch and then Steve stuck another crappie.

Some people let success go to their head. A post went out claim impending victory based on an early 4-1 lead but we switched tactics from Steves strength, trolling, to mine, jigging a Hali. It wasn't long and the score was tied up at 4-4 , with 3 nice gills in the box, and the rooster wasn't crowing quite as loud.

The rest of the day was nip and tuck but in the end the old man of the lake, Steve Ash, won the bragging rights 8-7. Not that anyone is counting.

I guess that at one point in time I must have been ignoring my fishing partner and didn't turn to look when he caught another fish, and probably hurt his feelings, because he gave me a good, close look at a 10" crappie, right up side my head. He did apologize through the snickers and even sounded somewhat sincere.

All kidding aside, it was a fun day on the water with some fish caught and a lot of stories and laughs shared. That is, after all, what it's all about, isn't it?

I'm surprised you are holding back on how many bluegill you netted today......I know this is a crappie forum, but you are the undisputed bluegill king of central Michigan! I apologize again for swinging that crappie in the boat and in your beard, that fishy smell just kinda lingers....

If Jerry and I ever start a charter service, he nailed the name "Misbehavin Charters"

As many fish as we were marking we should have limited out, maybe if we pulled a trawler net we would have. That humminbird was a steady chirp on blue fish/goldfish.

A Good day on the lake with you Jerry, probably the last with a boat for this year.

Steve, I forgot to mention all the bluegills, must be concussion like symptoms from a crappie to the head .

When we got back to the dock in the afternoon, we noticed what I thought was a massive school of shiner minnows. They were so thick you couldn't see bottom in waist deep water (I know this because I've been in it after a set of keys once) and were on all sides and under the dock. A swipe with the landing net showed us that they were this years hatch of gills, all about 1 1/2" long. There were 10's of thousands of them. The future population of this lake looks to be good.

Every day starts out like that, then the thing hitting me between the eyes is the realization that I have an IT job.....

Going to have to advise Steve on keeping the tactics in his favor........
That would "Skew" the score in his favor just a bit.....

Darn it, I thought for a minute Steve used one of my tactics to show you that another fish was caught. You have to make sure to toss them back on your buddies side of the boat. He must have taken throwing lessons from Aaron because the last time he frisbee threw a white perch within millimeters of my beard!

That fishfinder would drive me NUTS...
Within minutes, that audible beeping noise would quickly be negated to MUTE.
And the little fish symbols... I gotta teach you how to read arcs on the screen so that your finder doesn't confuse thermocline for a massive school of fish!

Steve still had the fish on his line when I took a direct hit. As if the hit wasn't bad enough, I'd nearly forgotten how to get that fish smell out of my beard.

The chirping of the Hummingbird was drowned out be the squealing of the Minnkota. I'm not sure what's wrong with the TM but do know it's not good. The schools of fish out there are amazing, when we would find them they would be like Steves picture shows but when we were off the school it was blank. Usually when we market them we would get hit.

I know about the MinnKota. He called me this morning. I think it is on its last leg but I could be wrong. At this point, I think he could take her apart and see if he can find what is wrong. Especially if you are are already resorting to purchasing a brand new model if all else fails.

Then he can get a Minnkota Ulterra with I-Link and have one more thing that Aaron has to setup for him!

Easiest way to get rid of fish smell from your beard is to shave it off and start over. Kind of like skunk smell. You're doomed and can't get rid of it. Personally, I would keep it as a reminder for weeks to come. Besides, who do we have to impress at this point in our lives?

Isn't fish slime supposed to be good for your skin? Ask Aaron, he is savaant when it comes to all things in the "Skin Care" lineup due to his alabaster skin.
