    Default Bummer!

Well I saw my physician yesterday and she confirmed my suspicions that I do have arthritis. Osteoarthritis to be specific. Knees, and hips not too bad yet, ankles not too good, hands not good, and the real bummer is that it is in my spine and will most likely become the major issue. Now it's just a matter of keeping a positive attitude and staying active as much as possible. I just informed my wife that she is going to have to take up kayaking so that I have someone to help me out of mine. This explains a lot as to why it was so difficult to get up from my kayak the last two times I went out. Oh, and to top that off, it appears that all my years of kayaking have basically trashed my shoulders, which in turn, has damaged the upper ligaments/tendons in my biceps which have been trying to pick up the slack of shoulders. Gotta love getting old. And to think, all these years of having physical jobs, bicycle riding, hiking and kayaking I thought would pay off as I got older and it just happens that I am one of those exceptions to the rule and it has done more damage than good. Oh well life goes on and the crappies are still going to have to watch out for me.

Sometimes the news isn't always what we want to hear. Physical fitness has done the same to me as well. The best thing I could recommend is to ask the professionals what they recommend in order to help/combat the issues. What type of movements and exercises will provide therapy and posative results. IF however they tell you to stop fishing.... I would find another doctor!!!

I know your pain. I have an appointment to get a shot in my left elbow and both sides of my left wrist. My right wrist is already fused with bone from my hip. Getting old ain't for wimps. By the way how has your wife's recovery been. Danny

That's for sure. I already told my physician that fishing will be the last thing to go. She just laughed. Starting physical therapy in a few days. Basically she just recommended to continue being active and staying as limber as possible. There are a few meds on the market that might help a bit, but no guarantee, especially for the back. Prescription pain meds are out of the question for me as they make me mean, and I don't like that. I don't think it's in my nature to be mean so those meds just don't agree with me. The doc did say however that there might come a day when just dealing with the pain might not be an option. I knew whatever it was was getting bad when I started taking ibuprofen and acetaminophen regularly. And then when I was needing 3 or 4 at a time I knew for sure it wasn't just that I was sore. Whatever comes I will deal with it in the most positive and active way I can and will make the best of it. In fact yesterday I hopped in my kayak for two hours and found about 100 pieces of beach glass without even having to get out of my yak.

"D" ,Doc has already mentioned possibly having shots in my knees and possible hands as my wrists are pretty bad. My wife is doing great. She had a second surgery just a couple weeks ago and has recovered from that quite nicely. It might be quite possible that in the next couple months she will have her tracheostomy tube removed. Then it will just be a matter of surgery one a year or so to maintain the opening in her airway.
