I know that Gary (Fishingcouple) used to live in the Fremont area. On our many conversations, he has spent a great deal of time on the Muskegon River.
Depends on what you are looking to fish for? Muskegon Lake is chocked full of about every type of fish imaginable. Over the last 5 years, about 60% of the States Master Angler Walleye have come out of Muskegon lake. Plus you have access to the channel to lake Michigan. The guys over at "Snug Harbor" bait shop can point you in the right direction depending on what you are looking for.
Another popular area is White Lake (north of Muskegon). White lake also connects to Lake Michigan and has similar fishing as Muskegon. There is also the White River that the Salmon like to frequent. If we get a good rain, the fish should start pushing up the river. She is shallow in a few spots going up river so you need to pay attention. Find a hole and fish hot-n-tots, wiggle warts, or wee warts. Try Johnson's great outdoors in Montague.
