Nice and compact with interesting things going on.

Wanted to try some new things. First up……spoons.




These are designed to catch Skipjack Herring. A very good catfish bait apparently. I have never caught a herring on rod and reel. I have netted them in creeks and below damns. Dad pickled them, so we didn’t use them for cut bait.

I watched videos of people catching them using multiple jigs and spoons and wondered if the techniques they used would work for crappie, too. The herring strike fast and furious, in a reaction type of bite. They like lots of stimulus. Most techniques are specie specific as we all know, but there are still plenty of things to learn about crappie. Some techniques work with multiple species. We often catch catfish, bass, and others while fishing specifically for crappie. Sometimes catch crappie while fishing for bass.

I read where spoons have been quite good tied to some fellers poles. Folks that have taken the time to test and learn about them. You can search for “spoons” on this site and read what others have done with them.

There are all manner of design for spoons. This brand is not really known for catching crappie. I considered other spoons but imagined these as a good choice. Nice size and weight. I will need to test swim them to ascertain best speed to troll them. Too fast and they will twirl and spin up the line. Considering a leading swivel to help lessen the damage to the line as I learn.

Second idea comes from the world of trolling Cochanee Salmon. These are landlocked salmon. They are very fast and like crappie, strike at brightly colored lures. The same color patterns as crappie for the most part. They eat fresh water shrimp just like crappie do. There are millions of different shrimps out there, and I am pretty sure what those fish eat isn’t what I have swimming in my lakes. This is a Hoochie.






Typical rigging has a slip sinker inserted into the skirt. I used a jig. Like an over sized tube jig. 1/16th ounce went right in no issue. I doubt these will have a huge advantage over my other lures, but wanted to try them out. Many Hoochies are thin and junk. Stick with Boone if you are going to try it yourself.

I attended the July meeting of the Eastside Garden Club, a fishing club misnamed on purpose. I belong to the Hydrilla Circle. Anyways, I got there early to help prepare the meal which was fried bluegill, grits and coleslaw. Someone, not me thankfully, forgot to bring the hushpuppies. I fried the fish and made coleslaw. The fish were some filleted some whole. It was hot, and I mean hot baby. We were underneath of a shelter a now dead member paid to have built just for this very purpose.

Any old ways, I brought free jigs for the men. They mused to one another and swapped them about and divvied them up amongst themselves. I would say about a hundred of them. All hand ties this time. It was so hot that many members were no shows, so they all got what they wanted. One feller even said that he had been selling the ones he grabs. I laughed and told him GOOD !!!!!

One of the members who has caught more fish than anyone else probably, was eyeing the candy in the store. He said that there were a few in there that were of the magic coloration for a particular lake. I really don’t fish there and mostly it is a boat ride kind of lake for me. I plan to take three women tubing there tomorrow. Girls just want to have fun. Anyways, he shared with me and I appreciated the insight. I think he wants me to make him some with that same color scheme. I will. He has a bad back and can’t go out in his boat but is supposed to be getting some sort of weird injection that will have him dancing with the stars. I sure hope so.

I have been experimenting with the ones that will be in my box. I have some Living Rubber coming soon I hope. I am tired of the boring colors I am currently using.

I like the new blades in gold. They are the right size and have deep cups to them. Cheap light weight metal, but they should spin like crazy and throw lots of vibration.
