    Default Motor messed up

I have a MERCURY classic 50. It was running like brand new. I was going 20mph. I hit a stump. It stuttered and slowed down to 7 mph. One time it caught up and started running like new again. So I shut it off. When I started it up again it cranked and idled like new. When I open it up. It surges for a second but will only go 7mph. Sure hope you guys have an idea of what might be wrong. Can't afford to take it to the boat doctor right now.
    Thanks

SERIOUS doubt's a lower unit impact caused that. Have you repaired and water tested? Something tells me you will still have the problem. I don't see any evidence of fuel running down the bowl.
Look at the boat from the back and spin the prop. I think you will find the blades or prop shaft bent.

That gasket could be the problem as it is not seated properly. If the motor revs up but boat don't go likely a spun prop. Common when hitting a stump.

I have an electric fuel pump. Gas was pouring out pretty good. I don't know how the shock knocked the gasket loose. It must not have been very tight. I haven't fixed it yet. I'm going to work on it now. I've been smelling gas but couldn't tell where it was coming from. This might be a blessing in desgiuse. It could have happened at a worse time. Motor messed up

So sounds like it's been leaking a while. Like Bill added, it could also be the hub. If the motor is reving up in RMP's but not moving fast then it's the hub slipping. If the motor is trying to rev, but won't, it's likely the off balance of either the shaft, or the blades preventing it. Did you look at the prop and spin it?

I'm sure it's not the hub. The gas is the problem. Hopefully!

Found the problem. The nut holding the float bowl came completely out. I'm going to try to put it back together.

That fixed it. Guess I'm lucky it happened when it did.
