Just went through this on 40hp Johnson. Hose plugged by daubers. Removed hose and cleaned it out and reinstalled. New pump installed. Still no pee. Removed hose blew compressed air back through the fitting. Blew dauber mud out through the bottom. Reinstalled hose. Plenty of water discharging through hose now.

On your first water pump replace, don't just get the impeller, go ahead and get the kit. It is likely you will need one of the other items, go ahead and have it to start with. If you don't need it then, keep 'em and NEXT TIME just get the impeller.
At my first change, I always do the kit, that gives me a reasonable base line. If the old stuff looks good, I keep 'em.
As mentioned, the impeller looses a lot of "Flex And Flick" being bunched up in that housing over time. I like to note direction and lube it well for that initial start up.
Oh, and then there's the thermostat...

The first Mariners were made by Yamaha. In mid to late 70's they were introduced in the US and sold by Mercury dealers. There was some kind of trade problems with the government. They then started resembling Mercury motors. I always liked the Mariners and thought they were the previous year model from Mercury, which wasn't true.

I had always thought Mariners were Merc motors too.

The metal tag on the side of my engine clearly says made in Japan. My Mariner 40 horse twin carb long shaft electric start is a 1988 model according to the certificate of title. If our you and had the foot removed to replace the water pump impeller. I would also go ahead and check the gear oil see if it's got water. If it does, do a little research on the various seals and to do this you made to rig up a little air pressure only about 10 to 15 lb and then use the soapie bubbly stuff to see if there's any leaks. And be sure to check where the ships rod goes into the foot because there is a little bellows type rubber seal there. Mine was bad and it was constantly getting water into gear caseName: PXL_20240301_043746129.MP.jpg

Had a impeller come apart.... rubber parts through the system, real PIA, change the impeller, I change mine every 3 years or sooner, kit first time is the best idea, always carry a spare impeller in boat box.

Gear oil looks good, motor kicked off and ran nice and quiet (but I kicked it off after 5-10 seconds of not seeing the tell tale water stream) This motor looks PRISTINE, outside and under the hood! I just had a stroke, then heart surgery, and found this boat to "flip" to basically cover my "out-of-pocket" expenses. I've changed water pumps/impellers on my other boats, and it isn't a tough deal.....usually an annoyance. HOWEVER, after being released from "ZERO ACTIVITY" restrictions to "LIGHT RESTRICTIONS", it is nice to be able to tinker a little (some much needed "therapy"). I refuse to sell anything that is going to give trouble to anyone on the water. I bought it with the understanding that it ran fine, but over the winter 5 years ago, a raccoon got under the tarp and destroyed everything. The person had it reupholstered, but couldn't get it all figured out with the wiring. SO, I redid all the wiring, went to fire it up to try it out.....NO PEE STREAM!

I have ordered the water pump kit, and will replace it when it gets here Monday. It will let me have a good frame of mind knowing that when I sell it, it is the absolute best it can be! I know that I wouldn't want my boat to break down with my kid on it when we are out fishing trying to make memories.....

That engine looks brand new. Rig should flip easily. My engine is faded scratched and shows signs of abuse from former owners, but with the TLC I give her she takes me fishing and brings me home safely.

I really really doubt its the water pump. Its a plugged hose somewhere on the pee line from those daubers. If the motor wasnt getting water, you would have set off the alarm within a couple minutes of running it, maybe less. The pee indicator is just that, an indicator of water flow as an overflow out the motor. It can run and get water even if the pee line is frozen/clogged. Ive clogged the pee line many times with duckweed and just ran the motor the rest of the day with no alarms until i could get home and clean it out with a long wire with the motor running on muffs.
