Default 175 Evinrude won’t go in to reverse

Hey guys, I have a mid 90’s 175 Evinrude that won’t go into reverse. It goes into forward fine, but when I switch it into reverse, it just sounds like it is grinding.

can you put it into gear when it's shut off? If so try to put it into reverse & take your foot & push on prop to see if it engages or trys to turn & clicks like it's not fully into gear. If it turns motor over but clicking trying to slip then adjust cable.

I would check the cable first too.

Pretty certain the shifter cable "pulls" the mechanism when moved to reverse (pushes for forward) so each time it does, it is actually stretching the cable a very slight amount. Most likely yours is now stretched to the point it is not fully engaging the gear. Likely a minor adjustment of the cable adjusting nut will cure the problem.

Never mind, I looked up a video on YouTube and I see how it’s supposed to work. I’m going to take the cowling off tomorrow and do some checking, and go from there.

I'm a little late to the party. But, for what it's worth small adjustments are your friend.

Best case it's out of adjustment and not pulling it fully into gear, worst case the corners are worn off of the clutch dogs in the lower unit.
