    Default BAtttery Troubles?

I was having trouble with my trolling motor speed, a Minn Kota Edge 55 lb thrust. 12 volt system. While running full speed on 5 it would sometimes kick the breaker. In addition it would run awfully slow. I checked all of the connections in the motor, foot pedal, and battery. All were clean and tight. I then checked the wiring and breaker. According to Minn Kota I need at least 8 AWG cable/wire and 60 amp breaker. What I had looked like 10 AWG and 50 amp. I made the change and had no more problems kicking breakers. I gained about half a mph. But the speed doesn't last. Last time out I limped back to the ramp (electric motor only). My battery appears to be a Wal Mart brand, deep cycle. It is dated 6/19. When charged and I use a load meter it says it is good. There is no fishing line around the prop. The boat is a 1648 with a 40 HP on the back. Usually it is just me and the dog. Even though it tests good could it be the battery? Is age catching up with it causing a quick discharge? All of this happens in about two hours.

It very well could be the battery. Have a buddy that would let you borrow one? That would let you know if it was the battery

right after charging it WOULD show good, turn off the charger and let it set over night then retest it. it could be age catching up with it not holding a charge very long

This, check voltage after setting overnight.

It sounds like you’re simply using all the capacity in the battery. Since you were tripping the 50A breaker, we can assume you’re drawing 50 amps at full throttle with the T/M. If your battery is 100ah capacity, then 2 hrs is all it should provide. Typically folks don’t troll at full thrust for hours and that’s why their battery (s) last much longer before they get discharged to the point of failure.

Not what I wanted to hear, but you may be correct. I fish mostly electric motor only lakes and generally use full throttle to get me to places where I have caught fish before. I don't use full throttle for two whole hours but use it a lot. It just seems so slow, .8 kph. Thanks for your input.

It was the battery; strong enough to take a charge but too weak to hold one. Battery came with the boat. I have had it two years, never thought to check cells. they were covered by stickers. It was a '19 year. So probably time for a change anyway.

Also, your application would benefit with from a Bluetooth lithium model. That way, you can use your phone to always know how much battery life remains.
